Interview from german BRAVO Bravo: As Laney in the movie "She's All That" you are wearing really ugly horn-rimmed spectacles. Are you shortsighted in real life, too? RACHAEL: (laughs) You got me there! Actually I have to wear glasses, I'm really shortsighted. But I hate having to wear them, so I got contacts three years ago. BRAVO: Do you always follow the latest vogue? RACHAEL: No. Jeans and T-shirts are my favourites. I'm really no fashion victim. Next time I'm in London I'll buy second-hand clothes again. BRAVO: In "She's All That" all the girls made a great fuss about who's becoming the prom queen. Do you remember anything like that from your days back in school? RACHAEL: Oh yeah, I knew a lot of girls who couldn't think of anything else but prom night but not me. I wasn't really into that kind of stuff. Anyway, I left High School after six months to take private lessons. BRAVO: When was the first time you met Freddie Prinze Jr.? RACHAEL: I met him in 1997 during the filming of "House Of Yes". Well, actually it was on premiere night because I had a real small part and never saw him on the set. BRAVO: In "She's All That" you fell in love with him. What about real life? RACHAEL: If I say I don't like him I'd lie. He's really cute and all but we're just good friends. BRAVO: Is there anyone special in your life at the moment? RACHAEL: Oh yes, for 18 months to be precise. I met him on a journey - and I feel so happy with him. His name's Ryan and like me he's in show biz. But he doesn't like it very much when I talk about our relationship. BRAVO: Let's talk about a very important scene in "She's All that" then. Freddie kissed you. Do you remember your very first kiss ever? RACHAEL: Every second of it. I was 13 and it was on my birthday party. There was this boy, and I thought he was really cute. So I invited him to my party and in the end we were waiting in front of my house for his mother to pick him up. When his mother drove around the corner he looked me deep in the eyes -and kissed me. I never found out wether it was his first kiss. We never dated again. BRAVO: Are you the romantic type like Laney? RACHAEL: Absolutely. I love dreaming, moon shine and candle light dinners. The only thing I don't like is when guys get me flowers. It's such a shame watching them die in their vase. Leave them on the fields, guys! BRAVO: What was childhood like? RACHAEL: Well, I grew up very protected in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is a very quiet and green place. I had a really good childhood. My mother was always there for me, and my younger brother, Ben. Ben is 17, he goes to college and works in a hardwarestore in his time off. My father is a welfare worker, he takes care of kids who can't really get along with their parents. My parents never tried to steer me into show biz, that was an accident actually. BRAVO: But how did you become an actress? RACHAEL: I started modelling for katalogs when I was ten. One of my first jobs was an add for dog food - with my face on the wrapping ... (laughs). After that came a lot of TV commercials. Five years ago I had a small part in short movie which they were shooting in Minnesota at that time. They showed it at a number of festivals and some manager in Hollywood saw me and she was impressed. She called me and said: "Hey, I give you a chance but no guarantee. Would you like to perform in a Hollywood movie which will be about 79 minutes longer than your last?" What can I say? A month later I was shooting "Babysitters Club". It's kind of a sequel to a very famous US series. And that was it ... BRAVO: How many movies did you make so far? RACHAEL: Twelve, including "Living out Loud" and "Strike!". "She's All That" is may favourite because I like romantic comedies -especially when there's a happy end. It's so much like "Cinderella" which is my favourite fairy tale. BRAVO: The press always compares you to Natalie Portman and Winona Ryder ... RACHAEL: ... yes, and I take that as a big compliment. They're both so beautyful and talented. But I never met them. BRAVO: By the way, have you met any movie stars yet? RACHAEL: I had a somewhat funny encounter with Leonardo DiCaprio three years ago; he played Basketball with some of my friends, but he's not really my kind of guy. He's much too feminin. Then there was Sarah Michelle Gellar. She has also a small part in "She's All That". BRAVO: Would you like to be in a series? RACHAEL: Not permenant, no. I did some guest starring in "Dawson's Creek" in two episodes. It was fun but I think it would be kind of boring to play always the same role. I want more!
