SYNDESIS, TOPOTHESIA, AND WABI-SABI:
Drawing, Building, and Thinking

PROJECT 1 (GROUP) BRIEF:
Thinking the device and the program

DATE ISSUED: Monday 04 January 2005
DUE DATE: Monday 18 January 2005, at 9:00 a.m., Room TBA

PROJECT BRIEF This, the first part of term project one will involve the introduction and discussion of theoretical material, which, further developed, will serve as the general theoretical structure for the design activities of the term.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
The theoretical framework that we will attempt to address throughout this term will be informed by explorations of the concepts of "topothesia," tectonics, and "wabi-sabi".

PARTICULAR OBJECTIVES: To collect pertinent information as part of the analytical phase of this term's project. The activities of this phase will help the participants of this studio obtain the necessary immediacy to philosophical, historical, programatic, experiential, and symbolic issues that will define the design and construction activities of the next 10 weeks.

NOTE: Projects 1 and 2 will run simultaneously.
