Class Activities

We do a lot of fun and exciting things in music class. I am going to work hard to keep this page updated with photographs and journal entries about what the students do each week. All of the activities the students will participate in will link back the NC Standard Course of Study. For the student's safety I will only be using first names in the captions for the pictures I post.

Kindergarten and First Grade

What's going on? - This week we are studying the violin. The violin is a member of the strings family and is the soprano of the orchestra along with the flute. The violin has four strings that are made to vibrate by pulling the rosined (pine sap covered) bow over them. To make the pitch rise on a violin all one has to do is make the string shorter by placing the finger at certain points on the strings.

What music are we listening to or performing? - Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, and the first movement of Mozart's Eine Kline Nachtmusik

Second and Third Grade

What's going on? - This week we are studying the clarinet. The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. The clarinet is a long tube in which the air vibrates to make a sound. The air flow is regulated by a reed (a small piece of wood that covers the hole on the mouth piece). To make the pitch rise or fall on a clarinet, different finger patterns are used.

What music are we listening to or performing? - Bach's Sinfonia in F Major, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, and Mozart's Clarinet Quartet in A

Fourth and Fifth Grade

What's going on? - The fourth and fifth graders are spending this week taking a crash course in piano. We are working on taking our knowledge of where notes are on a page and transferring it to the keyboard. The students are learning to play very simple songs, and I am inviting them to create their own.

What music are we listening to or performing? - Happy Birthday, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, and Mozart's 12 Variations on a Theme (Twinkle, Twinkle)
