MY OCCUPATION
I am an Ambulance Officer in the New South Wales Ambulance Service based in Hay. I am the Officer-in-Charge and hold the Rank of Station Officer Grade 1, Advanced Life Support Level 4 (ALS).
I joined the Ambulance Service in July 1969 at Goulburn. I spent my first four years in Goulburn (Goulburn District Ambulance Service) before I moved to Tumbarumba as Relief Station Officer between Tumbarumba and Batlow for 12 months, transferring to Hay in late April 1975.
I was the first permanent Ambulance Officer (Station Officer) appointed to the then Hay District Ambulance Service. Until this time the Ambulance Service in Hay was an Honorary Ambulance Service. The Hay District Ambulance was formed by a committee in 1938 and was run by a Local Board, and an Honorary Superintendent, with up to 15 Honorary Ambulance Officers who did the Ambulance work. The last Honorary Superintendent was a Mr. Colin Leigh Marshall. Many of the long distance trips to Melbourne Hospitals during this time were undertaken by road, long before Air Ambulances.
Hay Ambulance covers some 25,600 square kms or 10,000 square miles in old terms. A number of the properties cover by the Hay Ambulance are up to 160 kms from Hay, particularly in the north west of the area.
Hay Ambulance currently has 5 Officers three Advanced Life Support Officers and two Level II Officers. There are four ambulance vehicles, two VW ambulances, one Commodore and an F250 Ford.
