Modern Physics
In Unit 9, "Light Phenomena", we examined the wave nature of light. In this
unit, we will study the particle nature of light. Specifically, we can assume that light
consists of discrete bundles of energy. These bundles of energy are called photons. The
quantum theory attempts to develop a dual model that fits both the wave nature and the
particle nature of electromagnetic radiation.
We will also look at the history of atomic models. We will study the Rutherford, Bohr, and
DeBroglie models of the atom. We will also consider some of the more abstract ideas of
Heisenberg and Schrodinger.
