The 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry
Reference CD-ROM

Is Now Back In Stock!

The 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Reference CD-ROM

By Robert M. Baker and Brian E. Hall

An excellent reference resource for genealogical and historical information!

After a long, long time, the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry CD-ROM is back in stock!

What's it got on it?

* The complete and unabridged company rosters.
* An alphabetical index roster.
* Service and Battle Histories from Dyer's Compendium, Speed's Union Regiments, the Adjutant General's Report, The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, The Compiled Service Records, and other official sources.
* In-depth original essays on several of the more obscure battles in which the 39th participated.
* First-hand accounts of service in the Big Sandy Valley by three different Union veterans - totalling over 120 pages.
* Dozens of photos of 39th veterans, places, etc.
* Dozens of period maps, many placed next to the battle accounts for easy reference.
* Facsimiles of primary source materials discussing such topics as the dismissal of Col. Dils, the demotion of Sgt. Buskirk, the Battle of Louisa, the killing of Peyton Justice, and other controversial episodes related to the regiment.
* New information on the controversial Alf Killen.
* A Big Sandy Valley Civil War Time Line.
* Information on ordering and using records from the National Archives, the Kentucky State Archives, and the Military Records and Research Branch.

Format: This CD-ROM is PC-compatible and operates in any internet browser.  The files are in html and jpeg format, printable (for your relatives who still don't have a computer), and operate just like an off-line website.  Disc will operate in almost any PC-based computer, but works best on a machine with at least a Pentium II processor, a 4X Speed CD-ROM drive, and 32 Meg of RAM.  No software to install!

What this disk does not have:

* Individual compiled service records for any particular soldier.
* Genealogical or biographical information for any particular soldier.

This disc is a regimental history and deals with the service and experience of the veterans during that time period and under those circumstances.  As such, it is a military history rather than a genealogical reference.  The rosters will serve the genealogist well, but we did not intend to create a reference specific to genealogy.  This is just a note to inform our patrons that, with a few exceptions, we probably did not include your ancestor's information on the disc.

Robert and Brian,

I cannot get enough of your CD. The timeline is extremely helpful and I will read every word of all the items on the CD. You and Brian did an excellent job. It is a valuable resource as well as entertaining reading.

Lt.-Col. Jack Brummett (Ret.),

Austin, Texas

Hey Robert,

I just received the CD-ROM in the mail today and it is fantastic! Your work has not gone in vain. I'm glad to have been able to shed some information to you on the Hibbitts "boys" and their history. I'm also glad that between the two of us that we got some confirmation that ol' Alf [Killen] was with the bunch at the Battle of Cranesnest along with the Hibbitts "boys" . . . I was glad to see a photo of John Dils considering that my gg uncle, William G. Rose, was involved in the raid with Menifee into Piketon, KY, and he raided John Dils store. It proves to me that my time, information and research also has not gone in vain also. The history of the 39th KY (USA) and the 7th VA (CSA) has lots of history dealing with several relatives in my family, but this is only one chapter. I have many more mysteries left to solve. I am glad to have helped out. Again, I "Thank you" for the information that you have passed along to me involving the 39th.

Your "Confederate Comrade,"

Rob Hibbitts,

Thomasville, North Carolina

Dear Rob,

I'm supposed to be painting the house, but your 39th disk came today, so you can pretty well imagine what I've been doing. Regretfully, I have to stop and actually do some manual labor, but I'll return to it. I lack the words to tell you how grateful I am. Nothing I have done, or am likely to do, warrants such generosity. The amount of time and effort you have put forth to produce the CD is clearly obvious. I don't know how many other regimental histories exist in this format, but it clearly portends a significant advancement in the way Civil War history is made available. You and your colleagues are to be thoroughly congratulated . . . I've only scratched the surface. But I am particularly delighted with the maps. I have made copies from the O.R., and I have used both a very nice atlas and some nifty mapping software (that allows me to zoom in to as close as 1"=250'). Nevertheless, I have still had a hard time finding some of the locations. The maps on the 39th CD help a great deal . . . Clearly, I'll be up late tonight!
