Private George T. Burgess


George T. Burgess, Private, Company G, was born on December 31, 1843 in Lawrence County Kentucky. He was the son of Gordon C. Burgess and Eliza Truitt (or) Louisa Trust.  He married Angeline "Angie" Borders in Boyd County on June 9, 1867, a grand-daughter of Judge Archibald Borders. Their children include Annie Laura, Malcolm R., Millard, Samuel L., Charles A., George W., Julia A., Allen P., and Egede. George maried second to Elizabeth Wellman in Lawrence County on January 1, 1906.  George died on March 14, 1919 in Lawrence County and was buried in the Burgess Family Cemetary, on a hill behind the old homestead. George was wounded during the war and not only served with the 39th Kentucky but also with the 14th Kentucky Infantry, Company H. 


He enrolled in the 39th Kentucky Infantry, Company G, on November 3, 1862 at Peach Orchard Kentucky. He was in that company through February 1863, and then transferred to the 14th Kentucky Infantry. He served in the 14th until January 1865, when he then transferred back to the 39th. He was discharged September 15, 1865. He was wounded in several battles, specifically on August 4, 1864 in the seige of Atlanta, while in the 14th Infantry.
