The Enfield Rifled Musket, with socket bayonet. Valued at $20.00, most Mountaineers appreciated the improved accuracy this rifle possessed compared to their old smooth-bore muskets. It was not uncommon for a man to sign up to join the Union, get his Enfield rifle and bonus, and then just disappear (from The Illustrated Catalog of Civil War Military Goods).
