If you sign on, you will be asked to identify yourself so we know who you are before accepting your request. The list provides occasional and infrequent postings regarding new discoveries and progress on the book and we are always open to questions and comments. Be aware that this listserver is devoted to preserving and disseminating the history of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry and has as its members descendants of those men. This is my G great uncle Peter Rakes who is a brother to Richard Rakes.Both joined the army on Sept.14 1862 at Peach Orchard Ky. Peter was captured on Nov.29,1862 and Richard was captured on Dec.4 1862.Peter was paroled at City Point Va. April 3 1863.I do t have the dates when Richard was paroled. I got my information from Frankfort Ky..

Family tradition is WW Fields was captured near Prestonsburg (Wireman Shoals) 4 Dec 1862 by Col. John Clarkson. Held prisioner at Kings's Salt Works, in Virginia. But escaped with a companion, after a Confederate relative suplied horses for the getaway in February of 1864. He was supposed to have served as Chaplain for his Company. After his return it is said that he served under Judge C.M. Layne, of Louisville. He later preached Judge Layne's funeral. Most of this information is from oral history, and church documents (that Ihave not seen). Corporal Riley Coleman is my Great Grandfather. He is buried on Lower Pompey of Pike County along with his brother Private Nathaniel Coleman. Both graves have idential head stones that states their rank and company E. I hope this information helps documen the history of the Colemans in Pike County and the war.

We hand typed the 39th roster, and were going to add every pension application in toto to be used at the library only.
