Private Marion Hall

Nancy Hall, mother of Marion Hall of Co. B, 39th Ky. Vols., the year 1847, lived in Floyd County, Ky. for 20 to 24 years and has lived in Johnson County for nearly one year where she still lives. The soldier lived in Floyd County while the soldier contributed.

She owned no land at any time during her life and owns none now. Had one horse while the soldier was at home and it was taken by the rebels, had no cow and have no property whatever now.

That David Hall is about forty-six years, his health very bad, his earnings were worth nothing for several years before the soldiers enlistment and nothing since that time. We have no other children and never had any other.

That Marion was about 15 or 16 years of age when he enlisted and his earnings were worth more than one hundred and twenty-five dollars per year for two or three years before enlistment. That he worked at home nearly all the time on a rented farm, worked some for Jesse Hamilton of Floyd County. She had no allotment, got arrears of pay and two bounties and both have expended in her support. She is not able to work any at all and has not been for fifteen years able to do anything.

Sworn to and subscribed to before me Nancy Hall to whom the foregoing declaration was made in my presence before she signed it and in the presence of James Murphy and James A. Porter. This 16th of September 1871

I Jesse Sturgill on oath say that I have been a practicing physician for 10 or 15 years, that I have been for 20 or 30 years acquainted with David Hall and that he has been disabled from making a living by manual labor. That the disease is and has been for about 15 years such that it affects his body and all his right arm and he is wholly disabled from making his living or that of a family, his disease is called Law Eavel and will probably be permanent. I have no interest in the pension claim of the wife of said Hall.

Jesse Hamilton says that in the year 1863, Marion Hall, son of David and Nancy Hall worked for him in all about sixty days for which he paid him about fifty cents per day and paid in provision for the family and that he has no interest in Mrs. Halls claim for a pension. Jesse Hamilton

Marion Hall, born Jasper Marion Hall in 1847, enlisted as a private in the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment (USA). He was mustered into service on October 30, 1863. The records indicate that he was born in Pike County, was a farmer 5' 8" tall, with fair complexion and light hair and blue eyes. On Nov. 8 of that same year while on duty near James Vances' on Beaver Creek, he was accidentally wounded. His father David Hall, later testified that "he was wounded on November 8th and died on November 11th". Marion Hall was buried in the Nimrod/Miles Hall cemetery.
