Military Record
Following information is taken from compiled service records from the National Archives. The record was compiled in 1888 and included extracts of Confederate records and unit muster rolls.
William Robinett, Private, Co. H, 39th Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry. "Captured Aug 14, '63 in Buchanan Co., Va. while on scout."
"In his examination before Comm. Carrington, C.S.A, at Richmond, Va., he stated that he lived in Pike Co., Ky, and was captured abt. Aug 15, '63 in Buchanan Co., Va. by one Capt. Smith; was a pvt. in Capt. Buchanan's Co. Va. State Line and remained with until it disbanded. Enlisted in 39th Ky., July 19' 63. Did not wish to enlist but was conscripted. Desires to be exhanged. Comm. Carrington recommends that he be exchanged as a prisoner or war."
"He was brought from Castle Thunder and confined in Libby, Richd. VA., Sept. 26, '63. Admitted to Hospl. No. 21 Richmond, Va. Nov. 18, '63 with (illegible). Retd. to quarters Dec 13, '63 in confinement at Pe--bert-- Jan 8, '64 remark - 'vaccinated.' He was again admitted to Hospl. 21 Richd. Va. Jan. 14 '64 and died Jan 19, '64 of Rhemu. Chr. and Pneumonia." (All of this is typed as is on his service record. JEB)
From the pension file for his widow, Mary (Polly) Scarberry, he left 4 children under 16 at the time of his death. His wife received a pension of $4 which was later raised to $8 per month.
