Class of 2001 Looks Top-Notch

Entering Class has 271 cadets

[Fall 1997] The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is proud to introduce the members of its news cadet class, who will become outstanding representatives of the university community. As we approach the start of New Cadet Week, we are expecting 3245 freshmen, 18 transfer students and 8 readmitted students, for a total new enrollment of 271 cadets. The total for the corps (all classes) should be between 650-675 cadets for 1997-98, depending upon returning upperclasses.

Our freshmen come to us with improved academic records. Their grade point average is 3.4 and they boast average SAT scores of 1250. The averages are above those for the university (all colleges) and compare favorably with the averages for engineering. Enrollment at Virginia Tech has become very competitive - more than 17,000 applications were received for the targeted enrollment of 4,300.

We are pleased to report that women continue to enroll in strong numbers; 57 of the new class are females - 23 percent of the class total. Corps enrollments reflect a female population of 21 percent.

ROTC affiliation continues to be a strong motivation for our freshmen. About 87 percent of the new cadets have indicated an ROTC preference. Total ROTC enrollment in the corps is approximately 84 percent.
