Cruisin' Costa Rica

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was one of the highlights of my trip.
A cloud forest differs from a rainforest by the fact that this forest is high
up in the clouds, so the rain it gets is considered more of a "horizontal rain"
as the form of mist from the clouds.

A strangler fig tree

More forest

Jen and I on the bridge over the canopy of the cloud forest

More forest. It's a good thing I only scanned in the best shots 'cause we've
got about 30-40 pictures of forest ;-)

Roots from another tree planted up top this one reaching down to the ground.
These type of trees are initially symbiotic, called epiphytes. Once the tree
above has all its roots in place, it proceeds to strangle the first tree, thereby
becoming parasitic.

A waterfall

Believe it or not, but this insect is about 3-4 inches long. Eeech!!!

Definitely some different forms of vegetation around.

The canopy is so thick that very little light gets down to the base
of the trees, allowing moss to grow on everything.

Jen and her favourite tree

Jen and I at the Continental Divide. On the Pacific side of the sign it was
hot, sunny, buggy, and no wind or clouds. On the Atlantic side (three feet behind
us) was cold, windy, cloudy, and no bugs.

Well ya gotta admit, it is a "Rainforest"
