2. George Jenkins Maris

George Jenkins ancestry were Friends, and his parent were called Orthodox friends.
When he married Mary Elizabeth Smith, whose family were the "Hicksite" (rural or evangelical) Quakers, the couple were disfellowshipped for Marrying Out of Unity (MOU).

Became treas. of Guthrie County 1884. called a native of Morgan County OH (in
History of Guthrie County, 1884 ed. (p. 325); First to IA (Keokuk County) abt
1858. stayed abt 3 yrs; returned ot OH; Then 1862, with parents, returned to
IA Cedar County; stayed there till 1872. Then to Guthrie County, Section 17 of
what became Seely twp. Farmed there till 1878. Elected to legislature on
temperance issue in 1876. (Perhaps defeated after one term,) he in any event
returned 1878 to Cedar County, where he was dairyman. In 1881 returned to
Guthrie. In 1883 the people of Guthrie County elected him treasurer. Member of
Ancient Order United Workingmen, and of the M.E. church.
Hist of Guth County gives birthdate as January 17, not June 17.
Guth Cem Records erroneously gives middle name as "JACOBS"!
He went to Green River Valley (Elgin) UT in 1907. He was a director of the
Fruit Growers State Bank and vice president of the Elgin Power and Water
Company.


3. Mary Elizabeth Smith

marriage given as either Jan or Jun. She came with parents to IA at age 6.
(would have been abt 1853). settling at Springdale, Cedar Co. After marrying
George J Maris, "they resided in Cedar County till 1872 when they moved to Green
River UT where Mr Maris died in 1915." (Waukon Republican)
