3232. Godfredus WING (WYNGE)

A learned man and a prominent preacher, Godfriedus Wynge was probably
among the early protestants who sought refuge in England. Or he may have
come there with John Abasco, in 1550, as he was tutor to his children
after the latter left England for Denmark in 1553. They found an asylum
at Endie where he preached for some time and translated the whole Bible.
At the accession of Elizabeth, he probably returned to England, for in
1551 the Bishop of London recommended him to the Senate of Frankfort, who
elected him as minister to the Dutch refugees residing there. In March
1562 he was minister of the Church of Sandwich, England. By the end of
1563 he was minister of the Dutch Church in London, where he resided
until he died. In one of his letters he mentions his wife, Levina. He
returned to Sandwich on account of persecutions of the Protestants in
Flanders. His having preached in Sandwich, the same place as his
grandson John; the similarity of their religion and belief; and the age
of Matthew Wing seem to confirm his parentage of Matthew. However,
according to other records, the "Wynge family came from Wales."
