Overall Plans Critique

When I first got my plans I was excited. Joe Huntley did a great review so I thought I would just post his here as it covers most everything so here it is in his own words....

Many times plans seem to get worse the more they are copied such was the case here. I took my plans to a local digital printing place and had them scanned to TIFF files and saved to cd. I then used Corel Photo Paint 10 and using the eraser tool cleaned all 4 sheets of plans of all the little dots. I also deleted all the extra nonsense that Nick puts on in good drafting practice, but bad for the the builder. I am talking about the balsa and ply grains on the parts. Now one person asked me how I am going to know what type of wood is used there, well that is simple "It is printed on the part !" so with all the extraneous stuff gone the plans look clean and crisp and a hell of a lot easier to read.

I next took the scanned plans and pulled them into Corel Draw 10 to vectorize the parts fot the laser. One major thing that came out of the entire deal is the fact that these plans aren't DRAWN to scale but are BLOWN up 18% from the 101" plans.

NOTE: Those of you with the smaller version and want to build the 118" just take your plans to kinkos and for $20 - $25 dollars blow them up 18% (which is stated right on front of instructions in big letters) and you will have the larger version for half the price and which will be the exact same as Nick will send you.

The next thing I had to do after vectorizing the plans is to set the notches etc to the correct size. REMEMBER when plans are blown up the notches etc will be the wrong size unless you plan on using off size wood. Nick states on a disclaimer which also tells that the plans are blown up 18% that "Do Not Use The Size Wood Stated On The Plans" he says that thes sizes are for my smaller 100" B-25 that I have blown up!!!. What I did to make it easier and because it will not harm anything since the plane is in actuality only slightly larger than the smaller version and that there will be no structural problems, was to adjust all notches etc to the same as stated on the plans ex. 1/4" x 1/2" crutch and 1/8" x 1/4" stringers.

Other than that the only real problem I can forsee at this time is that all your placements on the plans will be too wide so other than the end points you will have to decide whether you want to line ribs and fuse formers up with either the front or the rear inside of where they are marked on the plans.

Jesse at Lazer-works is cutting my short kit and the cost is just $150.00 including shipping. If you have a project you want to do give him a yell as he is the most reasonable for short kits I have found yet.

I will post more as I continue with my project, but felt this was probably the most important note to post on these plans.
