January 28, 2001 - I am just starting this page. I will add more as time goes on.

My Letters To Vela and Kumar

When I write Vela and the other children, I write in as simple English as I can. That is why some of my letters sound very strange.

Remember, Vela does not read or write Tamil much less English. Therefore, when someone reads a message to her, she must memorize its contents since she cannot reread it later or even take notes on what it says. Therefore, half of what I write about is ignored because she cannot remember it all.

Also I must be careful how different ideas will be translated. I have noticed that all of the translations are colored by the person doing the translation. Sometimes, the kids get reports that I am sick or that I will be coming to visit them tomorrow.

I do not include the letters to and from Mari since she is a very private person.

I think each letter costs the children 10 rupee (25 cents). This effects what she writes and how often.

The letters at the bottom are more current. Go to the bottom. (I have been trying to figure out which is the best way to present the letters... first to last or last to first.)

I am trying to teach Mari how to obtain money from a Money Gram using her

passport. I send Mari many messages but she does not understand. (See her

letter below.)

Can you please help?

I sent Mari two Money Grams. To receive the money, Mari must go to

either American Express office at Spencer Plaza or to any Thomas Cook

office, show her passport, and give them the following information:

Send From: "Robert Purser, Longs Drug Store,

Placerville, California, USA (530) 622-5288"

Amount of Money Gram: "$12 US"

Money Gram Transaction Number: "UG001140" (or "VG001140")

Money Gram Message: "See Passport For ID"

=-=-=-=-

Money Gram #1

1. Money Gram Date: 24.11.2000

2. Money Gram Sent From: Robert Purser, Placerville CA USA 530-622-5288

4. Money Gram To - Last Name: "Kabali"

Thank you for the information about the Money Gram. This is very

important to me.

This month, I am sending Money Gram letters to you for Mumtaz, Prabhu,

Shanthi and you. The letters contain only part of the information. On

January 24, I will e-mail you with the rest of the information. Do not go

to the Money Gram man until I give you the other information.

The Money Gram for you is only $22 (about Rs.1000) I will send the rest

of the Money to Kumar to give to you. (He must use his passport to get the

money. You do not have a passport.)

Kumar, VERY IMPORTANT. When I send you a Money Gram, you must tell me

MANY RUPEE DID YOU RECEIVE?

I will be traveling next week and will write you on the 14th about the

Subject: Message For Vela (sent Secure)

Date: Fri, Jan 12, 2001, 8:13 AM

Dear Vela,

Today, I have received much bad news. Therefore, I need your help.

1. You are not receiving my messages. I wrote you e-mail message and you

do not answer or you tell me that you did not receive the messages.

Someone is stealing my messages to you. I think it is Prabhu's grandmother.

2. Prabhu's grandmother sent me a message today which makes me think that

Prabhu is not going to school. Prabhu's grandmother tells me stories about

the teachers which I know are not true. Because Prabhu's grandmother

tells me stories, I will send Prabhu only half the money for next month.

Why is Prabhu not going to school? You told me he was going to school. Why

did you lie to me?

3. Mumtaz now wants to use your mailing (post office) address. Now I can

no longer send mail to you because everyone uses the same address. Unless

you send me a new post office I must not send you any more letters with

money grams information. You must have good post office address and it

must be a secret from everyone else. Mumtaz mother is very careless about money.

4. Mari has a big problem but I do not know what it is. I have sent her

two test Money Grams but Mari did not receive the money. She must take her

passport to the Money Gram store to obtain the money but Mari will not do

this. WHy? Now I must stop sending Mari any Money Grams until I know what

is the problem. Mari will not tell me. What is the problem with Mari and

her passport?

5. I cannot send any more money to Mari's friend because your Grandmother

is fighting with Mari about the money I sent for you.

6. I cannot send money to Mari's bank account. The bank manager did not

give me the correct information.

7. Kumar is gone this month so I cannot send any money for you to Kumar.

8. You must tell me what the Money Gram man said when he looked at the

pictures I sent you. Did he still ask for the ration card? Vela, I have

sent two messages to you asking you this question. If you do not tell me

what the man said, then I cannot send you any more money via Money Grams.

Therefore, I can only send you Rs.1600/- this month. Why do you not answer

my questions? You must tell me what happened when you showed the Money

Gram man the pictures. Do you not go to the Money Gram office? Is someone

cheating me?

I cannot help you if you do not help me. You and the others are my eyes

in India. I cannot see what is happening. You must tell me what is happening.

Vela,

I want to get a passport for you. But to be safe, I first got passports

for Kumar and Mari. But now, Mari has a problem with her passport. I do

not know what the problem is. Mari will not tell me. What is the problem?

I have sent Mari two test Money Grams. Mari must show her

passport to the Money Gram man to obtain the two Money Grams I sent her.

But Mari does not do this. Why? Has something bad happened to the

passport?

As I told you before, I sent you four pieces of paper this month via the

post office. These should arrive next week. These are information sheets

for Money Grams. One is for you, one is for Prabhu, one is for Mumtaz and

one is for Shanthi. Be very careful with these information sheets.

On each sheet, the transaction number is missing. I will send you the

TRANSACTION NUMBERS on January 24. This month, you will need both the

information sheets and the transaction numbers to get the Money Gram. So

put the information sheets in a very safe place when you receive them via

the post office.

Kumar has sent me information about the Passport man. I will write the

passport man next week.

However, I cannot get you a passport until I know what is the problem

with Mari's passport. What is the problem?

Dear Vela,

I sent Mumtaz a message at the same time you wrote me. Hopefully she has

received the message by now.

I told Mumtaz that I think the Money Gram man cheated Mumtaz and Prabhu.

I sent Mumtaz and Prabhu US$35 each. I think the EXCHANGE RATE is "45 rupee

per US$". Therefore, Mumtaz and Prabhu should have received Rs. 1575/- and

not Rs.1505. She received Rs.70 less than she should have received.

Mumtaz goes to school to learn how to multiply numbers. Therefore,

Mumtaz should calculate the money for you.

Next time, when you and Mumtaz go to the Money Gram man at Spencer Plaza

or at Thomas Cook, you must ask Mumtaz to look at the EXCHANGE RATE number

and then calculate how much money you should receive.

That is why Mumtaz goes to school. To learn useful things. To make

sure you are not cheated. Mumtaz must not be lazy. She much help you so

you do not get cheated.

I will write you a long letter next week about your passport.

Also Mumtaz must send me a good address (post office address) for Mumtaz

and her family. She must not use your post address. It is not safe to use

the same post address. Then, I will send Mumtaz a very long letter about

her passport.

Earlier I had sent Money Grams to Prabhu and Mumtaz. The Money Gram man

TRIPLICANE, CHENNAI - 600 005.

PH: 91-044-8572764.

You must talk to him and tell me. Should I get a passport for Prabhu first

as a test to see if Mr. Baisul is a good passport man?

Vela, Please explain. You say that "My brother Mr.Arun is secure my

tour, so he have certificate he want to take passport..." I do not

understand. Please give me more information.

Why has Mumtaz not send me good post address? She does not give me a

good address to send her letters by post. I cannot send letters if she has

no post address.

Vela,

The cost of the Certificate should be about Rs.50 at most.

You must also get passport photos

Today, I purchased a Money Gram for you for $20. If the exchange rate is

45.75 then you should receive about Rs.915/-. I have paid all fees and

commissions. You are to receive all the money. You must show the ration

card to get the money.

Vela,

1. The most important thing is for you and Mumtaz to obtain passports. No

one else is important.

2. Since I do not know Mr. Baisul, maybe we should get a passport for

Prabhu or Mumtaz's father as a test BEFORE you and Mumtaz get your

passports. I do not want any mistakes with the passports for you and Mumtaz

so I think we should do a test with Prabhu or Mumtaz's father first. Have

you talked to Mr Baisul?

3. It is very important that we take Mumtaz to Singapore with us. Mumtaz

is very lazy. I think if Mumtaz visits Singapore, Mumtaz will work harder

in school. Mumtaz will learn many things in Singapore. Will Mumtaz come

with us to Singapore without her mother or father? Or must I bring her

father?

4. I do not know how to get a "Singapore visa" for you, Mumtaz, and Mari to

visit Singapore. Does Mr. Baisul know how to get a Singapore visa? I do

not need a Singapore visa but you, Mumtaz, and Mari need a visa for

Singapore. (I think the people in Singapore do not like the people from

India.)

5. I do NOT want to get a passport for Arun. However, if we need to do a

test of a new passport broker or of a Singapore visa then will I get him a

passport as a test.
