December 31, 2000 - The Resort Town Of Mahabalipuram

Escape to Mahabalipuram

About three hours from Madras is a resort town which has some of the oldest stone structures in India.

Every time I come to India, the kids want to go there... not because of the history of the place but to escape from Madras and their families.

Here is an old colonial house which is closed to the public.

Time To Party

The first time we went there, we rented two rooms. One for the boys and one for the girls. However, all the boys and girls ended up sharing the same room leaving me all alone. So now we all share one room with Kumar and I sleeping on mats on the floor. And if Vela is happy, she will sing and dance on the bed.

Time to Sleep

A lot of the time, the kids just sleep. The rest of the time they try to look as cool as possible.

For breakfast, we have a soft white steamed cake made from fermented ground rice and soaked in a soup. (Note the bottled water.)

Time To Eat
Here Mumtaz is serving breakfast which might have come from this outdoor kitchen near by.

Time To Ride

Mumtaz, Prabhu and I get rented bicycles and Kumar and Vela get rented 50 cc motorbikes.

The Toy Store

I give the kids 100 rupees each day which instantly disappears at the local toy store. (See me in the mirror right.)

And Time To Do Nothing

And most of the day, the kids are very busy doing nothing.
