The Restoration of the Church

by T. C. WISENBAKER

MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER participated in the beginning of the restoration movement, and ever since, my forebears have been members of the Church of Christ. I became a member at the age of twelve. I always believed, and still believe, that our goal of restoration of the New Testament Church with no creed but the Bible is a proper goal.

About two and a half years ago, my wife and I came in contact with Christians who had been baptized in the Holy Spirit and who believed that He operates today with the same mighty power as in the New Testament days. I immediately started an intensive study of the Scriptures to determine if the Holy Spirit can so operate in this period of church history. I think the following three factors may have prepared my heart for a fuller understanding of the Scriptures:

The Influence of a Friend’s Personal Experience

In the first place, several years ago we heard a minister of the Honolulu Church of Christ preach one sermon on the person and the importance of the Holy Spirit. We then realized that we had neglected to study and appreciate one of the persons of the Godhead.

Secondly, many years ago we had heard the testimony of a close friend, that God through a vision and a miracle had saved his life.

Finally, for the past twenty-five years I have been engaged in highly technical development work. In this work I have associated with some of the great engineering and scientific men of this era. I gradually came to realize that we humans know absolutely nothing except that which God has revealed to us. We do not know one basic fact. We can only make our limited observations, name phenomena, classify it, and deduce so-called laws from this. Within our limited experience these laws usually work. However, we do frequently have to limit or modify these laws. For instance, consider the effect of Einstein’s theory of relativity on the previously well-established Newton’s laws.

The Necessary "Power from on High"

During this period of restudy I also investigated the reasonings of some of our brethren who preach and write that nothing miraculous happens today. I invited some of them to reason from the Bible with me and establish, if possible, that the Scriptures teach that miracles have necessarily ceased.

About two years ago I became completely convinced that I had, all these years, neglected to receive the available "enduement of power from on high" so necessary to be an effective Christian. We went to a prayer meeting at the Lester Nichols’ home in Pinnon Hills, California. There I prayed and was prayed for that I might receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I spoke in a new language. There was nothing emotional about this experience and for the next three weeks, no matter how I prayed and regardless of how I tried I could not again speak in the new tongue. Then one night, while on a business trip, I prayed in a motel room and the Holy Spirit returned the manifestation to me. This valuable addition to my prayer life has been available and in constant use ever since.

A Burden for My Church Brethren

After learning, so belatedly, of this added dimension of Christian experience, I received a burden for my restoration movement brethren who so need the power of the Holy Spirit to effectively spread the Gospel. I am now retired and have been giving my time to studying and spreading the knowledge of this availability of the Holy Spirit to as many ministers, leaders and members of the Church of Christ as will listen. I believe that the Holy Spirit is being poured out on all flesh in this day, and our efforts to spread the Gospel will become phenomenally successful if we will only accept His full mighty power and assistance. Truly, the Holy Spirit is moving to restore the New Testament Church.
