E-mail sent to Lee R. Raymond (lee.raymond@exxonmobil.com) and Max Presseisen (max.presseisen@exxonmobil.com), European Downstream Controller on October 30, 2002 Subject: Please stop knocking down my web sitesIn February 2002 somebody acting on behalf of ExxonMobil, put pressure on Yahoo, requesting the deletion of a website named History and Art in the Coats of Arms of the Popes. In October 2002 Esso Italiana srl acting on behalf of ExxonMobil, put pressure on Quipo.srl, an Italian provider, requesting the deletion of a web site named Rome in the footsteps of an XVIIIth century traveller. It is known that providers cannot interfere on the contents of the web sites they host, so by threatening them for the assumed defamatory content of a few pages, ExxonMobil knew the whole web site would have been deleted. These web sites had no commercial objective and were aimed at providing students of architecture and fine arts with information on Baroque Rome. I was never informed by ExxonMobil about their complaints on my views on EM management style after the merger. Everything was done behind my back, relying on the fact that providers usually delete web sites on the basis that they can do it at their sole discretion and do not communicate why they did it and who asked them to do it. Freedom of speech is the basis of our society: a man in your position should accept criticism. I urge you to reassure me that ExxonMobil will not be part of other unfair attempts to restrain my right to voice my views. Yours truly Roberto Piperno Rome, Italy The writer has been for more than 35 years an employee of various ExxonMobil subsidiaries in Italy and abroad. . ![]() (*) The words ExxonMobil, Exxon and Mobil are used in a generic sense. I actually worked since January 1, 1966 for Esso Standard Italiana Spa, subsequently renamed Esso Italiana Spa and Esso Italiana Srl. On April 5, 2001 I was notified that my contract had been sold on January 1, 2001 to another company named ExxonMobil Mediterranea Srl (previously a subsidiary of Mobil). Four days after this notification I left the company. Therefore I never had any direct legally binding agreement with Exxon Corporation or ExxonMobil Corporation.
