The system
Weather observations are made using a Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station, connected to a desktop PC. Wind sensors are mounted on a short mast above the peak of our 2 storey house in Kanata, Ontario (a suburb of Ottawa) - there is little to no interference from other objects. The rain gauge has a resolution of .2mm , and is mounted at the southeast corner of the first storey roof; it can be in a rain shadow if there is a northerly wind. The temperature and humidity sensor modules are mounted at the same location as the rain gauge.
The weather data is published using Weather Display.
Lightning strikes are tracked using an ISA version of Boltek's Stormtracker receiver card and antenna, connected to an old P200 desktop PC. The antenna is mounted approximately 3 meters above grade on the southeast corner of our house.
The lightning data is published using NexStorm, by Astrogenic Systems.
Me (Rob Hounsell)
I'm a 40-something electronics engineer who works on military aviation simulation by day, and tinkers with gadgets by night (when I find the time). I've been interested in weather since I was 10 years old. Creating this weather observation system is one of my hobbies. The challenge is finding the time to maintain it - I've been amazed at the number of people who've stumbled across it. Enjoy!
