The Doubting Thomas'
April 15, 1999

I guess all of us, at one time, doubted that Jesus was real. You may be sitting at church, clutching your Bible, and saying you're a follower, but you really believe? That is a question I ask of you today. The best place to start would be the apostle. They were ordinary men, who followed Jesus around for 3 years, yet many times they didn't understand. Look at John chapter 20.

They had listened to Jesus saying that he would die, and then 3 days later rise from the dead, yet they thought that this was just nonsense.

But on that first day of the week, even while the room was locked, Jesus entered into their mists. They thought it was a ghost, or a figment of their imagination running wild. But lo and behold it really was Jesus.

The disciples were so excited, except for Thomas who was not there. He would not believe until he put his finger into the wounds. When Jesus returned again, Thomas saw and believed.

(New King James Version)
John 20:29-30, " Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."

Jesus wants us to believe without seeing him. It is a faith that can't be fully understood by most Christians. It transcends all of our former thinking, and makes sense out of nonsense.
Luke 24, "...And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. "

How many times have you walked around your own hometown, and have seen God at work? There would be a thousand time, and then some.

1. Every time there is an accident, and someone is hurt, God is there to heal our wounds. Although we recover, we never thank God for letting us live another day. Instead, we blame ourselves for a accident that has left us crippled or maimed for life.

2. When we are in legal troubles, our world begins to revolve around our situation. We feel hopeless and powerless to fight the emotional worries of the day. Our faith begins to crumble because we never put our trust in Him.

3. We may be going to mass every Sunday. We listen to His word, celebrate the sacrament, and yet fail to understand what Jesus did for me on Calvary. When disaster strikes, our faith crumbles like skyscrapers getting imploded for a demolition crew.

We doubt that God cares for us, lest knows that I am alive. It is often in this situation that we truly believe that God has a purpose for it to happen.

Psalms 18:6, "In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears."

It is often at the lowest point of our life, or at the ends of our rope, that Jesus will catch us. This is where calls us in a relationship with Him, and He begins to fight for us. All we have to do is ask, and we shall receive.

Let's look back at the legal problem. This would be like a hiring a new attorney and winning the case without owing a cent. That is the greatest gift you'll ever receive. All He asks in return is to put our trust on Him alone, and we shall believe.

But this is not as easy as it may seem, like many other people in my prayer group, there is a point in our lives where we must believe that God is real, and put our trust in Him. At first, I was real skeptic about this approach. I thought I must be crazy to put my trust in God.

Besides, why are psychics and fortunetellers be making boatloads of money? All because people want results now. Besides, we live in an instant gratification world. To wait on the Lord seems outdated. But the Lord knows what is right.

Let's put out our bitterness and doubts and let God take control of us. Let us be like Thomas, to believe what we can't see or understand, but through faith we will grow in a relationship with our heavenly father.
