For the Standing Order form

Hi, welcome to the Parents page of 7thA Rochdale Scout Group.

Here you will find information for parents of members and prospective members. The information has been presented in a question and answer form so you can find the point you need easily, if your question is not covered here then please contact us.

Q. How big are the Scouts?
A. The Scouts are world wide and have millions of members.

Q. How are we organised?
A. The country is split into regions, which are then subdivided into counties, the counties are divided into districts and each scout group is a member of a district.

Q. How is each group organised?
A. Each group is split into sections, although not every group will have all the sections. The sections are Beaver Scouts aged 6 to 8, Cub Scouts aged 8 to 10 1/2, Scouts aged 10 1/2 to 15 1/2 and Venture Scouts aged15 1/2 to 20.

Q. How are we regulated?
A. All activities which we provide for the young people must be provided in accordance with the Association Rules published in Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR). All adult leaders and helpers must have undergone a confidential enquiry before working with the young people. Instructors must be qualified in accordance with POR.

Q. Are leaders trained?
A. Yes all leaders must undergo training which covers all aspects of scouting.

Q.Which section should my child join?
A. This is dependent on age as stated above, although leaders have some discretion and will be happy to advise on individuals.

Q. How does my child join?
A. Simple really come along to a meeting of the relevant section and look for a leader, we are the ones dressed in brown uniforms.

Q. Do they need a uniform?
A. Not initially, we do not expect uniform to be worn until they are invested as Cubs or Scouts. This usually takes about 5 weeks whilst they work on their membership award.

Q. What activities do the scouts run?
A. We run many different activities both as a group and as part of the district. To give a flavour of the activities on offer camping, hiking, canoeing, climbing, abseiling, football, swimming, sailing etc.... This is a huge subject and not one which can be answered fully here, if you wish to discuss this further please contact a leader.

Q. What can the scouts offer your child?
A. We can offer your child the chance to take part in the many activities we run, the chance to visit local community facilities and talk to the people who run them. We will teach them how to enjoy the outdoors safely. We can offer your child the chance to develop as a person amongst a group of like minded friends, to take responsibility and learn respect themselves and others.

Q.How much does this all cost?
A There are some fixed costs, membership, subscriptions and uniform, after that it is up to you really. We provide most of the equipment a scout will need to take part in activities except items of personal kit. Membership currently cost £11 for a new recruit or £8 for someone transferring between sections, subscriptions are £5 a month by standing order. The uniform cost is dependant on the section and the size required.

Q. What do the activities cost?
A. The cost of activities varies depending on what the activity is, some are free others require a small charge usually less than £5, a weekend camp will be about £12 a week camp about £80.

Q. Can we help?
A. Yes, anything you can do to support our group will be appreciated. It does not mean you have to get involved as a leader although that would be a great help! we need assistance with ground and building maintenance, fund raising, administration and a host of other things. If you think you can help ask!!
