Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Rating (1-10): 9
Yes, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is not the Red Hot Chili Pepper's first cd. But, it is the first one by them that I own and can review. The Pepper's are very funky and distinct in their sound, something that they got rid of with their next release. I like this cd because it combines so many elements from the different band memebers. Anthony Kiedas sings in a rappish sort of tune, and Flea and Chad play funky rhythms behind John's harsh, loud guitar. When combined you get sort of a funky metal rap thingee, and it's pretty cool. Good songs to check out on this record include "The Power of Equality", "Breaking the Girl", "Funky Monks", "Give it Away", "Under the Bridge", "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", and "Apache Rose Peacock".

One Hot Minute

Rating (1-10): 6
After John left the band, Dave Navarro was replaced as the Pepper's guitarist, and the music wasn't as good. Although Navarro probably had more guitar skill then John, he wasn't able to accompany Flea and Chad on the beats, the lyrics remain the same as Anthony doesn't change a bit but this album is more mellow and popish for my taste. "Warped", "Aeroplane", and "One Hot Minute" are all ok.

Californication

Rating (1-10): 7.5
With John rejoining the band, I figured that this album would take us back to the Blood Sugar era. Well, it did and it didn't. This album is more bluesy and funky but the songs don't stick with you like Blood Sugar did. I would recommend buying this album only if you are a real Peppers fan. If not, stick with Blood Sugar Sex Magik and their older stuff, which I didn't review but have heard and is good.
