Way, way, back in the 1960's, way before Elvira, a favourite amongst Australian students was Deadly Earnest , the TV schlock horror host. Late on Friday nights, the atrocious old sci-fi and horror films became compulsory viewing, solely because of the gothic master of ceremonies.

Of course, I should really be using the plural, for in those days, Australian TV networking was so loose that the role of Deadly Earnest was played by different actors in different cities !

MELBOURNE

Deadly Earnest - Ralph Baker

RALPH BAKER played the role of Deadly Earnest in Gothic style on ATV-0.

SYDNEY

IAN BANNERMAN played the the role of Deadly Earnest on TEN-10, as the "Dead-Pan Ghoulie".

ADELAIDE - PERTH

Deadly Earnest - Hedley Cullen

HEDLEY CULLEN was in the ironic position of playing the undead Deadly in the
City of Churches.

Hedley had the broadest reach of all, because he was also seen on TVW-7 in Perth. Not bad for a former internee.

BRISBANE

Shane Porteus in ACP, looking dark and sinister ...

Closest I could get to a pic of
Shane looking dark and sinister...

SHANE PORTEUS brought Deadly Earnest to the tropics.

Yes, this is the same gentleman who starred in the long running soapie "
A Country Practice", as Doctor Elliot.

And you thought he was such a nice doctor,
but just like Dr Jekyll, he could turn into a Mr Hyde !

In more recent times, Shane kept the Deadly tradition alive, by killing off characters behind the scenes in Neighbours...

(Art imitating Art... You can tell I don't do this for a living , huh ?
...Apologies to R.L.Stevenson.)

I don't have ANY material on Shane's Deadly,
but Paul E. advises that there is a WaxWork of him at the
Gold Coast Wax Museum (WOW - they have 2 different Deadlies !)

If YOU are in the region of the Gold Coast Wax Museum,
please, please please, send me a pic of Deadly.
