The Viera Company requested
a zoning change on
12.7 acres from R2-10 (residential)
to BU-1 (retail/commercial) from the Brevard County Commissioners.
The Brevard County Commission expressed an interest in preserving this parcel
through acquisition, and they would at least like to see the Viera Company
preserve a wildlife corridor on the west side.
The 12.7 acre property is a critical link in the corridor for wildlife traveling from the Cruickshank Sanctuary to areas south. The proposed commercial development could fragment this habitat and remaining corridor to the extent that the Florida scrub-jay faces the threat of becoming extinct in Rockledge.

The 12.7 acres is located South of the Cruickshank Sanctuary on the south side of Barnes Boulevard in Rockledge.
The area is core reserve and noted in black on the Central Brevard Scrub-jay inventory maps.
The Scrub-jays on this site were mitigated for under the Endangered Species Act in 1994 for the Viera Development of Regional Impact, DRI.
Brevard County Natural Resources Brian Toland has banded the family of jays living on this site located just west of the children's day. The property is in optimal scrub condition.
Conservation Area A-1 borders to the south, and the 96 acre "Pine Acre" property borders to the west.
This issue was tabled twice by the Brevard County Commission, and rezoned August 2, 2001.
