Facts About
Lawns and The Tools We Use
Lawns
are the #1 consumer of water and synthetic chemicals in the suburban
landscape. 30% to 60% of water American households consume is used on lawns.
One
hour of lawn mowing is equal to the emissions of a 350 mile road trip. Power
lawn mowers, weed eaters and leaf blowers emit 12 to 34 times more pollution
than cars.
Less
than 1% of insects are harmful to plants. However the average suburban lawn is
deluged with 10 times more chemical pesticide per acre as farmland.
Over-watering
and over-fertilizing, creates thatch, a dense breeding site for pests and
disease.
Government
studies have found chemical pesticides and fertilizers in nearly all of our
nations rivers, lakes, and drinking water supplies.
Chemical
pesticides are poisons that endanger our immune, reproductive, and nervous
systems. Children, pets and wildlife are especially vulnerable. Pesticides can
remain active for weeks to months, and can build-up in soils remaining
hazardous for decades.
