Ever had great expectations ending up in great frustrations? I bet most us can really shout a big, "YES!," to that.
Thinking about this topic today, I can well remember some of the movies with beauty pageants in them. I remember the scenes where the over-confident women would right away step out in front--waving their hands as if they'd already won, even before the judges announce the actual winner. To their dismay, they soon find out that the most unlikely person in the group would get the crown. Being right in the middle when all this happens, one cannot help but to feel embarassed, break down in tears and run away. Ouch.
However, with the apostle Paul back then, things turned out to be quite the opposite. If you care to read Acts 20:17-38, you'll find Paul giving a farewell speech. He explains to his brethren that chains and tribulation have been revealed to be awaiting him. And that there is a pretty good chance that they might never see each other again. The brethren break down in great sorrow. "What now?," some of them were probably thinking. One of the greatest ministers of God's Word that ever lived is going to be put in chains. Anxiety, worry, questions, I bet, filled the hearts of some of the brethren at that time of great persecution. Needless to say, some of them probably expected the worst.
However, in turns out later on that God would once again turn the tables. "But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,..." The apostle Paul soon realized that God had a bigger a plan.
"...so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear."
It turns out, that the chains of Paul actually set more people free!
At the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, many expected for Christianity to die with Him. Little did they expect that as a result of that Christianity would now live gloriously forevermore.
So many of us have been hurt by great expectations turned sour. And it is for this reason why some people no longer live life in expectancy of good or better things. However, folks, the Bible shows us that our God can turn the tables anytime for those who trust in Him. That in Christ Jesus, no matter how bad things may appear at first, God has a suprise in store.
This can only be clear to us through the eyes of faith. If we really trust Him, then we can wait patiently for His glory to unfold in our lives. We can trust Jesus Christ. And in Him we can expect nothing less than the best.
Friend, have you truly asked Jesus to be the Lord and Savior in your life? If so, then get ready to be amazed.
If you haven't yet, this is God's promise if you do.
"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." - Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV)
Friend, believe. And you will see the glory of God.
God is sovereign.
