Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
- Ephesians 6:10 (NKJV)
For anyone who has had any experience in spiritual warfare one thing is clear. In the absence of God's power and grace victory will elude us. All of our knowledge about spiritual warfare will prove useless when we operate in our strength alone. The following reminders have been written based upon what the Lord has allowed us to understand from His Word concerning the subject that have proved vital in all our encounters. The material that you will read here will be updated as the Lord allows us to understand more about the subject as time goes by. We hope that the information here will prove to be practical and helpful in your personal battles against the enemy. God bless you in Christ Jesus.
Attacks from the enemy come suddenly and never are they announced beforehand. We get careless sometimes and forget that we are giving our adversary a foothold over us. In our anger, pride, and lusts, we open ourselves to demonic motives and intents. What happens as a result can range from an array of hindrances, distractions, confusions, temptations and more. We feel like we are bound in some way. We begin to lose our focus on what God wants us to accomplish and some of us may end up in emotional, psychological, and spiritual disarray. We begin to feel overpowered. These are the moments when anxiety, tension, and frustrations get the better of us. These are also the moments where we are prone to more deception and evil.
The devil only has one motive in attacking the children of God and that is to destroy whatever good that we have been called to do in whatever means possible. The worst thing for us to do in such situations is to rely on our own strength and wisdom.
The material below has been written to help you get back on the mount and breakthrough as you are wrestling with the enemy. Try to remember these key points in the face of battle.
Note: This material addresses only one aspect of spiritual warfare and assumes that the reader already has knowledge of salvation in Christ and has an active and personal relationship with Him.
1. Acknowledge your weaknesses and confess your sins to God.
And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." - 2 Corinthians 12:9a (NKJV)
Surely He scorns the scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.
- Proverbs 3:34 (NKJV)
...for without Me you can do nothing.
- John 15:5 (NKJV)
To put it simply, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. And the humbler we are, more of His grace shall be supplied. Something happens when we acknowledge our weaknesses and sins before our God. In our hearts we are declaring how powerless and helpless we are without Him. We also declare in humility that we have done wrong. Sometimes we might not be fully aware of the wrong that we' ve done. It doesn't change the fact, however, that God still sees it. And when He sees our willingness to yield in humility, God no longer will resist us, rather, He will assist us in our time of need. Humility is the key to power over the enemies pride. Rely on the grace of God and submit your weaknesses to Him.
2. Declare the promises of the Lord.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
- Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV)
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
There is only one sword that we can hold in our hearts which is sharp enough to pierce the enemy. That sword is the ever living Word of God. In the face of temptation, the Lord Jesus Himself did not cease to declare His Word. Like an immoveable road block, you are cutting off more and more of the enemy's options as you declare God's irrevocable promises upon His children. In the end, you leave the enemy with no other choice but to flee. Seeing that no matter how he tries to poke you with his lies you stand firm upon God's truth. So reading the Bible and studying it diligently is like sharperning our sword. The more diligent we are in meditating upon His Word the better equipped we will be in resisting all of the wiles of the enemy.
3. Have faith in the Word of God.
"For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea.' and does not doubt is his heart, but believes that those things he says will come to pass, he will have whatever he says." - Mark 11:23
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father."
- John 14:12 (NKJV)
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."
- Matthew 24:35 (NKJV)
It is not what you say you can do that matters. Satan can always prove you wrong. It is, however, what God says that matters. For no demon can ever make God a liar. At times where you feel faith steadily being sucked out of you, have faith in God's Word. You can do what He says you can. Not because of your own abilities. But simply because He says you can. It doesn't matter how you may be feeling about yourself at that moment. None of the things your feeling can change the promises that God has already established for you. Even the devil himself cannot annul God's Word.
4. Have faith in the Name of Jesus.
"If you ask anything in My name, I will do it."
- John 14:14 (NKJV)
...which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all prinicipality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the that which is to come.
- Ephesians 1:20-21 (NKJV)
There is power in only one Name. And that is the Name of Jesus Christ. The forces of darkness will not fear your name. But they will surely tremble at the Name of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is not who we are, but rather, who He is in our lives that makes a difference in the face of battle. Being adopted as God's children in Christ, we can have confidence in His Name. Remember, God hears us in no other name. The demons themselves fear no other but the Name of Jesus Christ.
5. Trust and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth..."
- John 16:13 (NKJV)
Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. - Romans 8:26 (NKJV)
The Holy Spirit is God's gift to us. Not only does the Holy Spirit serve as a guarantee of our salvation. He aids us in so many wonderful ways. In times of trials, He intercedes for us. In times of doubt and confusion, He guides us. Indeed, the Lord has not left us alone. He has not left us to be orphans. As He promised, He has sent His Holy Spirit to lead and help us through all our struggles.
