What A Girl Ought To Want
Soulful thoughts by Abigail Canton
" See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit." - Ephesians 5: 15-18 NKJV

There are approximately 51 Sundays in a year. Fifty-one Sunday services and sermons you’ve attended, multiply that to the number of years you’ve been a Christian and the result is astonishing. You’ve practically sung hundreds of different songs for the Lord; ranging from hymnals to rock n roll type of praise music. You’ve literally memorized countless verses from the Bible both from the Old and the New. But in reality, how many times have you wholeheartedly went to Sunday service not because you have to but because you want to. How many of those songs were really sung from the heart and not just from the lips? And the number of verses you know, are they at par with the ones that you actually apply in your life? Yes, friends, Christianity is not a one-time event. Real Christianity doesn’t happen on Sunday alone. This is the sad statistics of Christians nowadays. The real stuff happens on Monday to Saturday. That’s when you’re out of the environment of “church” that the Jesus in you really shines…or for many, is deeply suppressed.

The minute I received Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, I was thinking of just doing things normal Christians do. Go to Church, actively participate in missions and out-reach ministries, share the Good news when I get the chance and simply be a “good” Christian. I thought I was living a righteous life since I was not just a passive member of the church nor did I do anybody harm. Little did I know that I had a very distorted perception of what righteousness really meant. My basis for living a righteous life was merely external ceremonies. I was no different than the pagans, sad to say. I was utterly rebuked when I read of the Apostle Paul’s testimony to the Philippians: “ .. As far as a person can be righteous by obeying the commands of the Law, I was without fault. But all those things that I might count as profit I now reckon as loss for Christ’s sake. Not only those things; I reckon everything as complete loss for the sake of what is so much more valuable, the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord… I no longer have righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith. All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his resurrection..” - 3:5-10

In all of the good things I was doing, I thought God was pleased. I was only doing but not caring. I was only complying and not loving. It was more of a responsibility rather than service for me. I had a lot to learn about Christ and knowing Christ can only start with having a personal relationship with Him. That was where I lack. I was more concerned of my attendance in Church rather than my presence in the private conversations I ought to have with Him. I was more visible in outreach activities compared to my quiet times with the Lord. Going to Church is not a bad thing, but if it’s the only thing going for you then that’s a different story. Remember friends, salvation is not a group thing, it’s individual. And the Lord will never ask what congregation you belong to; coz truthfully, it doesn’t matter. What matters most is if the Lord really acknowledges you as His own, and like any relationship, it needs constant nurturing, communication, love and care.

There should only be one goal in our lives and like the Apostle Paul, with much conviction we should say: “All I want is to know Christ!” Knowing Christ may be in the form of church activities or in your quiet times with the Lord. However it may be, balance is definitely the key. There is also a very effective way of knowing the Name above all names and that’s through God’s love letter to His people… the Bible.

Friends, learn to please God rather than seeking out to please men. In all you do, God is only after one thing and that is if you have the right heart. Pray that the Lord will reveal to you things He is not pleased about and ask Him for the strength to change. Let us all stop being hypocrites and being Sunday worshippers only.

There is one secret that not a lot of people know about: “And the secret is that Christ is in you, which means that you will share in the glory of God” - Colossians 1:27 Be of good cheer! You need not look far, for HE is in you… all you need to do is take the time out to discover His goodness in your life. And may the Jesus in you truly shine brightest! God Bless.
