CowboyPoetry.com Names First Lariat Laureate
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- CowboyPoetry.com named the first Lariat Laureate today and "8 Seconds" winners in a global competition on the internet's premier Cowboy Poetry site. Native Texan Rod Nichols was recognized as Lariat Laureate for his poem, "Rooster." Nichols says he writes his poetry "to preserve our cowboy traditions." The site includes classic cowboy poetry, professional cowboy poets, features, and links. CowboyPoetry.com welcomes submissions from amateur and professional cowboy poets from around the world. The best poems will be included in a forthcoming anthology of cowboy poetry, "The Big Roundup." Earlier this month, nearly 10,000 people gathered at the 16th Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. Omar West, resident poet at the CowboyPoetry.com's BAR-D Ranch and just back from Elko, says, "When you spend time around cowboy poets and their fans, it makes you believe that honor, hard work, and a good bit of humor is important to folks. Cowboy poetry preserves the romance of the West and upholds the grand traditions and values of the American cowboy." The competition's "8 Seconds" winners are: Bob E. Lewis, Rafter "L" Ranch, Sherman, Texas; Rod Miller, Sandy, Utah; David Dill, ZD Ranch, Hillsboro, Texas; Barbara Bockleman; Bob Prinselaar, Fresno, California; Mike Diehl, Irving, Texas; Verlin Pitt, West Central Wyoming; and Neal Torrey, Bolivar, Missouri.
