Basketball
On 14th June, the school played its first basketball match. A team went to South
Grove and after a very vigorous game lost by 39 points to 43 points. Just two weeks
later there was a return match and the team had a convincing win, 34 points to 15
points. We are looking forward to meeting other schools in the area and feel sure the
team will do well.
Boys who have represented the school: Blackley (Captain), Berry, Brown, Colegate,
Ellis, Lockyer, Reid, Strutt, Tye, Wade, Wigley and Wilson.
Netball
The under 13 team were runners-up in the league, having won 15 out of 18 matches.
Badges were awarded to the following:
Helen Anastasi, Iris Harvey, Susan Marson, Scarlette Michalski, Linda Long,
Denise Regan, Carol Scott and Carol Whitby (Captain).
The under 15 team won eight out of 18 matches and came fifth in the league. Badges
were awarded to June Astill, Hilary Gardner, Carol Kreetzer, Pat Pizzey (Captain)
and Jean Wilson.
Rounders
We have played two games so far this season and have lost both, but this is hardly
surprising since no practice was possible owing to the waterlogged state of the
field.
Under 13 Cricket
The school has played three games, winning one, losing one and drawing one. In our
game against Down Lane, Farber scored 27 runs not out and Doel took 5 wickets for
13 runs.
Boys who have represented the school are: Farber (Captain), Avery, Barnard, Beasley,
Briar, Brown, Doel, Everest, Harding, Hedges, Herring, Martin, Oakley, Shadbolt and
Stapleton.
Swimming
Our girls did well in the Gala, coming second in the competition. Our under 15 relay
team won their event and the under 13 relay team came second in theirs. Kay Stitson
won the two lengths breaststroke and Pat Rallinson won the three lengths championship
freestyle event.
TOTTENHAM ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Boys
Competition among the schools for the boys' championship is always keen and this
year proved more exciting than ever. We were particularly anxious to regain the
Shield which we lost to Rowland Hill last year, as we have almost come to regard
it as our own, having held it for nine of the last eleven years.
Our hopes were threatened when we learned that two of our best "long distance" runners
were to be away on holiday.
However, at the end of the field events it was obvious that the issue was stiil open,
with many schools within striking distance of the Championship, as the following
figures show:
Rowland Hill, 29 pts.; Markfield, 28 pts.; Downhills, 28 pts.; Page Green, 25 pts.;
Belmont, 21 pts.
Our representatives in the Field Events (with placing if they reached the Finals)
were:
High Jump under 13. - K. Edwards (4th).
High Jump under 15. - D. Tompkins.
Long Jump under 13. - E. Hull.
Long Jump under 15. - C. Wilson (4th).
Hop, Step and Jump under 13. - I. Farber (1st). New record.
Hop, Step and Jump under 15. - R. Preston (4th).
Javelin under 15. - D. Aldous (5th).
Discus under 15. - P. Warren (2nd).
Shot under 15. - G. Bartlett (1st). New record.
On 5th July many pupils went to Harringay Stadium to support our team for the track
events. Excitement ran high all the afternoon, and when the 880 yards final was
deferred, because of some administrative confusion, it was obvious that Downhills with
69 points, Page Green with 67, and Rowland Hill with 66, could each win the Shield.
Everything depended on John Wigley, who was to represent us on the 7th July at Down
Lane.
Our representatives in the Track Events (with placing if they reached the finals)
were:
Hurdles under 13. - I. Farber (1st). New record.
Hurdles under 14. - W. Davis (5th).
Hurdles under 15. - D. Tompkins (6th).
100 yards under 13. - E. Hull.
100 yards under 14. - A. Lewis (2nd).
100 yards under 15. - R. Preston (5th).
220 yards under 13. - R. Cappell (2nd).
220 yards under 14. - M. Ford (3rd).
220 yards under 15. - G. Bartlett (1st).
440 yards under 15. - A. Dring (5th).
Relay under 13. - Edwards, Cappell, Hull, Farber (1st).
Relay under 15. - Bartlett, Preston, Ford, Lewis (6th).
On Friday, 7th July, Wigley ran a superb race in the 880 yards to finish 3rd behind
Parkhurst and Rowland Hill, so assuring our victory with 73 points to Rowland Hill's
71 and Page Green's 68.
Congratulations to all concerned, and a special word of praise for Graham Bartlett,
a "double" winner, and Ian Farber, who achieved a remarkable "treble" and two new
records.
