A T.V. DEBUT by Vera Moxon
On Monday July 16th Hollister, Johnson and I had a most interesting
day at the ATV studios at Elstree. We had been invited to take part in
a programme called "I am going to be" which was to be shown on the following
Wednesday evening. The programme was the first of a series about
choosing a career.
We arrived at Elstree at 9.30 a.m. with the youth employment officer,
Mr. Hooper, and we met the narrator Christopher Chataway for coffee. We
were then taken by the producer, Francis Coleman to the viewing room above
the studio to discuss the form of the programme and our part in it. We
were to ask Mr. Hooper a question about choosing a career. We then went
to studio A for a rehearsal. I was at first too interested to be nervous
but as the camera rolled towards me and the microphone swung into position
I could not help feeling apprehensive. As the film was made we could see
it on the monitors and it was strange to watch Dr. Himmelwait and Mr. Moffat
in person then glance upwards and see them on the screen. Eventually the
floor manager called "Break for Lunch" and it seemed that the studio emptied
instantly. We had lunch with Mr. Coleman and Susan Chataway then returned
to the studio for filming. We had another rehearsal and somehow order had
been made from the mornings' chaos. There was a short interval after the
rehearsal and then the floor manager started the count-down. A
stop watch was shown on the monitors and we could see the seconds ticking
away. Tension in the studios mounted and we were all nervous. On the
count of one the red lights in the studios which said "On Air" flashed on
and then immediately afterwards we heard the three tuning notes and saw
"ATV" flashed onto the monitors. My nervousness disappeared. We were on
the air! Chris Chataway said "Good Evening" and the programme began. It
passed quickly and the skill with which the cameramen worked made their job
appear easy. Our sequence came about half way through and although I knew
what would happen I was startled when four familiar faces appeared on the
monitor. I could hardly believe that one of then was mine. Four cameras
were used for the filming and as they rolled silently into position in front
of us we played our part in the production. When it was all over, our party
had coffee with Mr. Coleman and then Mr. Hooper drove us home.
We spent eight hours at Elstree and I enjoyed every moment of it. The
visit was a wonderful experience and on Wednesday evening as I watched the
programme at home I relived that unforgettable Monday.
