SCHOOL SPORTS
FOOTBALL
For the school Football Teams, the season was basically one of stagnation.
The first XI finished with a reasonably good record, but only three players
stand out: STAPLETON, who captained the side very well; EVEREST, who at times
played brilliant football; and FARBER. All three were awarded their colours.
The -15 XI finished 6th in the League; the -14 XI whilst enjoying its
football won very few matches.
The -13 XI are a very talented side and the highlights of the season was
their grim fight to hang on to a two-to-one lead and become the first Downhills
side for many seasons to defeat Rowland Hill School in a league match. This
side is the hope of the future, unless it too, deteriorates like the rest of the
school, which appears content with its mediocre level of performance and happy
to copy the worst mannerisms of its illustrious professional neighbours without
learning the basic skills of the game. "Duty, Courage, and Success". It is up
to each member of the school to give 100% effort.
ATHLETICS
A magnificent May day brought 15 new records at the Athletic Sports held
at Finsbury Park. Roberts' House, against all expectations and as a result of
hard work by Mr. FRANCIS, brought off a splendid victory from Wilson House.
J. Hillier (Roberts) was Victor Ludorum and S. Judd (Mandall) Victrix Ludorum.
At the Tottenham Sports held at Broomfield Park, Hillier was our only
champion (in the intermediate 440yds.) but despite poor support from several
entries who failed to appear, the team finished fifth.
Hillier, Farber and Capell represented Tottenham in the Middlesex championships
at the White City and the outstanding moment for Downhills was Hillier's
gallant 2nd. place in the Intermediate 440 yds. in a magnificent time of 47.1 sees.
CONGRATULATIONS!
CRICKET
Farber, the captain of the side, had the difficult task of leading
a team that has little experience of competitive cricket. An athletics
injury kept him out of the side till half-term, up to which time the record
was disappointing. Thereafter however, sustained by good bowling from
Smith and Stroud and steady batting, in particular by Oakley and Barnard,
results improved. Weather robbed the side of victory against Mount Grace,
but a splendid day brought splendid victory against a weak staff XI.
The league side, managed by Mr. Kekwick did well to finish third in
the Tottenham league. Their success is undoubtedly a result of his constant
interest. Stroud, Kesby, Oakley, Barnard and Nyman to mention only the
names that are recorded in statistics, all played their parts in victories
against Down Lane, Parkhurst, Belmont and South Grove.
Oakley and Barnard are both to be congratulated on their selection
for Tottenham Schools.
SWIMMING
Poor support thwarted our chances in the Tottenham Gala, but several
good performances took us into fifth place. Gordon and Howell were chosen
to represent Tottenham in the Middlesex championships.
SPORTS DAY by Theresa Miles (3J)
This year sports day was held on a Tuesday afternoon, fortunately it
was fine and everybody was feeling rather hot. It was held at Finsbury
Park track, which meant catching buses from the school to get there.
All the houses had entered most of the events and Roberts came top.
Gary Beauchamp, a Roberts boy, set a new record for the under-15 boys'
high jump. Mandall came second, about ten points behind, then came Wilson
and last Semmons.
John Hillier, also a Roberts boy, set some new running records and
was named Victor Ludorum. Out of the girls Susan Judd did best and was
Victrix Ludorum.
The day ended with the relays at about 4.30 and then school was dismissed.

TENCH by R. Few (3S)
A tench is a fish which is found mainly in deep muddy waters
and also they are found in weedy waters.
There are two different species of tench the ordinary tench
and the Golden tench.
The tench is a greeny colour with red eyes. The tench usually
come on the feed at dawn and feed up to about nine o'clock in the
morning. The best time to catch tench is when it is very hot.
The tench has two sensitive barbules on it's mouth, and when it's
hunting around the bottom for food the sensitive barbules find the
scent of the food and guide the tench to it. The main food tenches
eat are worms and maggots, grubs, larvae, bread flake and bread paste.
The Golden Tench is very rare in British Waters and it is not
often that you hear of an angler who has caught one. It is a
yellow-greeny colour with red eyes and is a very beautiful fish.
The golden tench has the same feeding habits as the ordinary tench.
The British record for a tench ever being caught in British Waters is 9lb. 1oz.

THE LITTLE BOYS OF TOTT'N'M by K. Diver (4J)
The little boys of Tott'n'm,
go to the Royal on scooters
And every time that they pass by,
they bib you on their hooters.
The little boys of Tott'n'm
Reckon they can dance,
But once inside the Royal,
They can only stand and glance.
The little boys of Tott'n'm
Inside the Royal do fight,
But each declares 'It was your fault,
I know I was right'.
The little boys of Tott'n'm
one day will grow old.
And then we hope these little boys will
be as good as gold.
