Here are some pictures from a trip to the northern part of South Vietnam in November 1971. I was on an inspection team that visited Military Police units around the country. On this trip we flew from Bien Hoa to Da Nang on a C-130 transport to do inspections on units of the 504th MP Battalion, which were deployed as far north as Quang Tri, just a few miles south of the DMZ.

The 504th MP Battalion HQ was in the hills west of Da Nang. At one time the Marines and Army both occupied the base and maintained a small stockade there.
One of the MP responsibilities was convoy escort along various roads. This armored vehicle was equipped with dual miniguns. It was regularly used for convoy escorts, but I took this shot when the guns were about to be test fired.
This is the Hai Van Pass, on Route 1, north of Da Nang.
This medieval looking scene was photographed at the summit of the pass.
This is a long distance view of Da Nang, taken from just north of the Hai Van Pass.
This is the coast of the South China Sea, seen from a little farther north.
Farther north, near Hue, looking west to the mountains.
The city of Hue had very few buildings left standing. These were the largest I saw.
The 504th MP Battalion had one company stationed at Quang Tri. This is part of the company compound. The person standing the middle of the scene is Lt. Stephen Karabin, one of the members of our inspection team. The sandbags on the roof were intended to keep the panels from blowing away in the wind.
