William Arthur West served in the education department for 46 years. At the time of his death he was the Chief Inspector of Schools in South Australia.

Later moved to Adelaide, South Australia
Head teacher at Fulham
Became a student at Grote Street Training College
Second Assistant at North Adelaide.
First Assistant at Grote Street School.
Marriage to Emilie Burnard
Head teacher at Woodville School.
Opened new school at Brompton (then called Bowden North).
Headmaster at Moonta Mines School. Lorna Emilie born.
Headmaster at Norwood, a Model School that became known as "Premier School"
Headmaster of the Pupil Teachers School where he laid the foundation of secondary public school education in South Australia.
Appointed Inspector of Schools Western district.

Acting Chief Inspector of Schools then Assistant Chief Inspector of Schools.

Also took on duties of Registrar of the Advisory Council of Education.
His son Esmond, then a medical student, discovered his father had throat cancer.
He died of Epithelioma of the Parotoid gland 7 months later, at home in Arlington. He had intended to retire to the seaside where he had built a house for retirement but died at age of 66 while still in active service.
