School building 1920. "In times of high wind-and these were frequent-the whole building would sway as much as six inches from the brick chimney. So, for safety, at a word of command the children would dive down under their desks until the swaying became less threatening. Part of the rood lifted, and the loose sheets flapped loudly." |
