Eternity:
One man’s story
A Short Story
By Roly

One night a man was feeling as though no one cared. His wife had died years before and since then he had felt unwanted. His children lived far away and never visited him, so it was then that he decided to end his life. So with no one there to stop him, he took a whole bottle of aspirin which he thought would kill him.

The man was not poor, in fact he was a very successful business man and he had high status in his community. His neighbors and friends all thought of him as a very stable individual, but if they could only hear of his tremendous experience and his brush with death. This is his story.

The man thought he had killed himself, he looked around. He was not in his home but in a pit that contained only fire. He saw many other people around, some were only bones, while others had skin in small amounts stretched over their bones. The skin that they had was rapidly being consumed by flames. Thinking that he was dreaming he asked someone where he was. The person laughed wickedly and asked him if he couldn't "feel" where he was. Then he knew, without being told, he knew he had died. He was in hell. He asked the person where he could go to see the king or head being of this place. The person was shocked and asked him if he was serious. When the man said that he was, the person told him to follow the heat, the person said that the closer he got, the hotter it would get. The man thanked the person and went on his way.

The man walked over hot stones and ashes until he found himself standing in front of a hideous looking creature. The creature seemed to be a guard or centennial of the dark, encroaching flames behind him. The man politely tried to get the centennial’s attention to no avail, so he decided towalk past the centennial. That got the centennial’s attention. The centennial asked the man, none to kindly, where he thought he was going. The man said that he was going to see the 'king' or head being of this place. The centennial roared an evil laugh and threw the man back to the front of him. The centennial told him that no one could see the 'king' without an appointment. The man told the centennial that it was an urgent matter that needed immediate attention. The centennial laughed another evil laugh and told the man that no one had urgent enough business that needed to be attended to immediately. The man would not step down, he said that if he couldn't see the 'king' through the front gate, he would go in through the back. This was enough for the centennial to see that the man was serious. The centennial stepped aside and told him to go right in. The man went in to the rather dark, hot room. There was only one thing he could see in the dark room, it was the 'king' or being itself. When the 'king' turned to face the man, the man saw that the 'king' was the Devil himself. The man gulped and took a step forward. The 'king' asked him why he dared to disturb his presence. The man answered him by saying that he wanted to get out of hell. The Devil laughed the most evil laugh that the man had ever heard. The Devil said that no one ever got out of hell. The man said that he wanted to get out and right away. The Devil called to his guards and told them to throw the man out. So the guards threw him "out into the darkness".

The man was terrified, and for the first time in his life he tried to pray but the prayer seemed to die on his lips before he could even utter the words. The man for the first time felt the real meaning of loneliness. In this dismal place he knew no one and no one knew him. Then, like a light in the darkness, a phrase that his wife had once read or said came to his mind, "No one comes to the Father, but through Me". The man once again tried to think a prayer, but it died before he could even think it. He thought maybe if he could get farther from the Devil he could try again. So with this thought he began to stumble about in an effort to leave but he found himself chained to a wall. His lips cried out, but it was not a prayer that his voice uttered but instead a long string of obscenities. He thought that now he would never be able to utter a prayer, but after the string of obscenities, like a refreshing spring in his soul, a prayer poured out of his heart that he did not try to stop.

After the refreshing prayer he seemed to fall asleep and he began to dream. First came a dream of his precious wife as she was asking him to attend church with her. He remembered that he had gone with her once but he had never felt the need to return unless it was Christmas or Easter. He remembered that the message the morning he had gone with his wife had been exactly about the need to become a Christian in order to escape this place. He continued to dream about every Sunday thereafter when his wife would come and ask him if he would go to church with her. He had always found some excuse to turn her down. He remembered that she had even asked him to attend a Bible study at their neighbors’ house, but he had once again turned her down with the excuse that he did not need to study the Bible in order to live a good life. His wife had been upset but she had forgiven him, even without his asking for her forgiveness.

The man awoke with a start, and he immediately began to think that if he had listened to his wife and gone with her to one of her Bible studies he might not be here in this awful place. It was too late to change that now he thought to himself. He once again began to dream, this time about the many times that he had overheard his wife praying or talking to a friend about him. Her conversations usually turned to him and his unsaved state. His wife had prayed faithfully each night. He had never objected, but he had thought it strange at the time that someone could night after night talk to someone that they couldn’t see or hear. Then the dream took another twist, this time it focused on his neighbors. They had tried their hardest to get him to come to one of the neighborhood Bible studies. They tried to the point where they invited him and his wife to come for a birthday party. He had accepted and they had gone. The birthday was the Bible study’s leader and they had celebrated with cake and ice cream, after which the leader had given a short study about the beginning of the life of Christ. During this study the man had heard about the Christ that had come from his home in heaven to die on a cross for everyone’s sins. The man had tried to look bored during the study but he had listened intently. He remembered thinking that he had a lot of sins that no one knew of, save for himself. He knew that if his wife had known about even half of the sins he had committed she would never have forgiven him. Since he had known that his wife would never forgive him, he hadn’t thought that God would have forgiven his many sins. These thoughts had disturbed him so much that he had not had the nerve to return to the study, even though his wife and his neighbors had asked him numerous times he had always refused. He had been able to tell that the neighbors were disappointed each time he had declined their offer, but he had told himself that he could not let himself into that vulnerable position again. The man once again awoke, this awakening was not as abrupt as the pervious one, this one was slow in coming. He now realized that there was only one thing he could do.

The man began to call out to the God that he had only now began to discover. His cries went unheeded by the occupants of Heaven. He could hear their joyous songs to God. Then, as if he were a child being offered candy and having it snatched away a the last moment, the voices began to fade until they were gone. The man continued to strain to hear the lovely voices again, but his efforts were in vain. The only sounds that he heard were the pained cries of the people around him.

The man looked around and saw that each person was wearing the same pained expression on their faces. He could well imagine his own expression. He felt the heat , heard the flames as the pain began to come in waves. He looked down and saw that his skin was being slowly burned off his bones. He felt the great pain but he didn’t cry out as the others around him did. He realized that he deserved this sentence that he been given. So, bravely he bore the pain that he now felt constantly attacking his body. He wished that he could live his life over again or that he could go back and make things right.

The man knew he could never go back and change his life. He then resigned himself to burning for an eternity in hell. The man once again dozed off, this time he was a child refusing to go to church because he didn’t want to. His parents had told him many times that he should not go to church because he had to, but because he wanted to. This dream seriously disturbed him, but he did not awaken. Now he was getting married in a little church, he remembered that he hadn’t gone to church until his wedding after his confrontation with his parents. The only reason he had married in church was because his wife had wanted a church wedding. He now saw that he had denied her nothing, except the thing she had wanted most and that was his salvation. Now, here in this place he wished he not denied her that, either.

After these dreams the man’s awakening was slow in coming, and when he did awaken he only found himself in the burning flames. The flames only seemed to get hotter as time wore on. He had to think, think of the things that he could have changed and try to ask God’s forgiveness for all his many sins. He knew that it was to late, but he told himself that he must try. After much thought, the man once again tried to pray, to ask forgiveness for his sins, but to no avail. His prayers never seemed to reach Heaven. The man became very discouraged and was ready to give up, but he knew he couldn’t give up now. He couldn’t give up now when he was so close.

Suddenly, right behind the man there was a loud hissing noise. The man turned around and there stood the Devil. The Devil asked the man what in the world he was doing. The man said that he was trying to pray. The Devil asked him if he knew where he was. The man replied that he was in hell. The Devil told him that he was absolutely right and in hell he couldn’t pray. The man asked for a chance to pray. The Devil normally loved to hear people grovel but, this time he didn’t want to hear it, so he told the man that God couldn’t hear his prayers anyway. The man said that he was right, God couldn’t hear his prayers while he was here in this place. The Devil said to the man that he had one minute and if God still didn’t hear him than he knew his answer. The man thanked the Devil, then he began praying.

The man prayed and prayed for forgiveness and for salvation. The man was praying so hard that he didn’t even realize that he was no longer in hell. The man finished his prayer, then he opened his eyes. Before him he saw all his children, every single one. All of his children had come to see him when they heard that their father had been found unconscious by the neighbor who had found him lying in his house beside an aspirin bottle. The neighbor had immediately brought him to the hospital. At the hospital the doctors had pumped his stomach and tried to keep him from going into cardiac arrest but had failed. They hadn’t thought that he would make it. His children promised to visit him more often than they had been up until now. They told him that they now saw a reason to come and visit him, and that was to keep him from going into deep depression again.

The man was overjoyed, he now not only had his children back, but he also had God to rely on. It was many years later before his children heard his version of his experience, and this was the story he told them.
