It was hot, too hot even for a tropical island. In the distance stood the huge ancient volcano that hadn't erupted in several decades. The town was fairly young, only about 30 years old, but the people living in the town were still wary of the old volcano. The history of the town was short but full of fear. Fear of the goddess that controlled the volcanos on the island. The goddess' name was Pele, the goddess of fire. The people's greatest fear was upsetting Pele. That is why the fear of the heat was so great. They were afraid that the heat meant that the volcano would soon spew forth it hideous lava.
A lone horn sounded in the distance, soon another horn joined the first in its mournful tune of warning. People begin pouring out from their homes and a buzz of conversation begins to build as the people make their way to the beach. The beach, the appointed meeting place should the unthinkable happen. The unthinkable being the volcano's eruption.
About 200 people are gathered on the beach, all waiting for the mayor to bring the much dreaded message of doom. The mayor, a tall, broad-shouldered native, steps up to the makeshift platform and calls out, "Silence!!" An expectant hush falls over the crowd as the mayor begins his speech of inpending doom.
"People of Pahala," the mayor calls, "goddess, Pele, is displeased! Our volcano experts have just informed me that we have about 24 hours to leave before the volcano explodes. I am sorry." The mayor, with a bowed head, steps down from platform. A buzz of conversation begins to once again swell as the people ponder this twist in events. Many begin to leave the beach to pack their belongs. Soon the beach is empty, save for three teenagers that are sitting in the sand talking.
"So, where are you guys going?" asks a tall blond girl to her two companions.
Sara went to her friend and hugged her. She rubbed her sobbing friend's back whispering soothing words of comfort to her. Kam walked over to the two girls and put his arms around both girls. The three stood on the beach in the fading light until their parents came in search of them.
The next morning there was a general atmosphere of panic throughout Pahala. Everyone was franticlly trying to pack up their lives to move them elsewhere. Sara was still in a state of dispair. She still bore the traces of her previous night's tears and the trails on her cheeks showed evidense that she was still crying.
"I dunno, probably Honalulu. How about you?" inquires the tall native sitting next to the blond.
"Same, you Sara?" the other girl asks the blond.
"Probably somewhere on Oahu or maybe we'll just go straight to the Mainland. Mom and Dad have been discussing it for a while now, so I wouldn't be surprised." Said Sara, bitterly.
"But you can't go back to the Mainland! Don't you remember why you left? That awful man!" The dark hair girl said.
Sara shuttered, then said, "I know, but I doubt we'd go back to L.A., probably somewhere else in the States Mainland."
"How awful! We've been best friends for almost six years and I won't let go that easily!" The dark haired girl exclaimed, forcefully.
"You're my girlfriend, if you left who would go to those sappy movies with me? Besides, we planned to go to the Mainland on our winter break from school! I can't go without you!" The tall Hawiian cried.
"You'll have to find someone else to do those things with you because I'm almost positive that we'll be leaving for the Mainland sometime tomorrow. Kamehamha, you will find another girlfriend. I'll always remember you as myfirst Hawiian boyfriend and Haleiwa, I'll always be your friend. The Mainland is only a flight away and we can write and e-mail and call, right? I mean, now you'll have somewhere to go on your vacations and so will I." Sara said.
"I know all that, but you're still leaving and we'll still be here in Hawaii! There'll be an ocean between us,"Kamehamha said, as he choked back his tears.
Sara took Kamehamka's face in her hands, and as tears streamed down her face she said; "Kam, you have to listen to me! I'll come back! I promise! Iknow that this mountain seems unclimable, but don't forget our love will make the climb bearable. Please! Please hang on to this promise! I can't see the light either but we have to trust that it'll all work out!"
"How can I trust if you are leaving and I'm not?" Kam asked, bitterly.
"Yes, how can we trust when you are not going to be here to remind us? You helped us see the light once, but without you our lives will be plunged into darkness again!" Haleiwa said.
"You CAN trust because you have the Light inside you, Halei. Kam, listen to me, I WILL COME BACK!" Sara spoke sharply to emphasis her point.
"You'll probably forget all about us as soon as you set foot on the Mainland, after all, you were born there and so was your daughter!" Halei whispered through her tears.
As Sara walked home with her parents, she listened as they discaussed their empending departure the next day.
"We should just go back to L.A." Sara's mother stated. "At least there we weren't evacuated because of volcanos!"
"Mary, you know we left L.A. because of the scarcity fo jobs and Sara's situation also prevents us from going back to L.A." Sara's father countered.
"I know taht we should just go to Honolulu with everyone else but my heart was hoping to go back to our old life in California."
"I know, I hoped taht too, but its not possible."
Sara ran up the steps to her room and closed the dor. She looked around the room that she had called home for six and a half years. So many memories, now those memories were in danger of being burned, not only by lava, but also by her heart. The fire in her heart held her hostage here on the Hawaiian Islands. They were her home now, not the Mainland, but here, by the ocean and volcanos. Here were the people that her heart longed for. She flung herself onto her bed and cried until she was exhausted, then she got up and washed her face and got out her suitcase.
Kam saw Sara through the crowd and tried to call out to her but the boom of voices prevented his shout from reaching her. He began shoving people aside trying to get to Sara. By the time Kam reached here side, Sara's tears were becoming hysterical. Kam put his strong arms around her and held her fast in his embrace.
The roar of planes overhead was soft at first but grew louder as they aproached. On the ground the hub-bub escalated as people clammered to get on the planes. As the last plane was being boarded the three friend took one last look at their beloved town and got on the plane.
As they took off the three friends looked down and were amazed at what they saw. The town was completely surrounded by lava. As the plane flew farther away they saw the volcano's top half blow hundreds of feet into the air and lava shoot out and covered the island completely with its lava.
"Oh, wow!" exclaimed Kam.
"I know! Imagine if we hadn't left when we did, we'd be toast!" Halei remarked in amazement.
"Are you O.K., Sara?" asked Kam as he put his arm around her.
"Well, I just witnessed my town be completely covered by lava, a mountain blow to bits and my home being destroyed. Maybe I should think about that..um..NO! I'M NOT O.K.!" Sara shouted.
"Ya, I guess you're right. Sorry." Kam said.
"Me too," Halei said.
I wonder where this plane is headed?" Sara pondered as the plane began its descent onto an island below.
"This isn't Honolulu, its not even close to the Big Island." Kam exclaimed loudly. The other passangers on the plane looked toward the three young people.
"Oh dear! You must be on teh wrong flight, this one has six stops and then flys to the Mainland." This said, the elderly woman who spoke turned back to her book and continued to read.
"THE MAINLAND!!!" the three exclaimed in a horrified manner.
"Oh no! I don't want to go back there! Its awful! I want to go to Honolulu with everyone else." Sara spoke passionately to her astonished audience.
"I know, but what can we do?" Kam spoke soothingly to his now hystarical girlfriend.
"Maybe we could just get off at one of the stops closest to Honolulu and not get back on." Halei stated, trying to comfort her crying friend.
"I guess we could ask if the stops are to let people off." Kam said softly as he continued to rub Sara's trembling back.
"Maybe you should first ask where the stops are before you ask if we can get off," Halei said matter-of-factly.
"O.K." Kam got up and began walking to the front of the plane. Just then, the voice came over the loudspeaker telling everyone to fasten their seatbelts for landing in Honolulu. Kam quickly returned to his seat and fastened his seatbelt.
"We are going to Honolulu!" exclaimed Sara through her hiccups and sniffles.
