| Aeneas Aeneas was originaly a Greek hero who was venerated by the Romans long before Virgil made him the hero of Aeneid. According to most mythologies, Aeneas was a soilder in the Trojan War, who after the war left Troy with his army and most of the remaining Trojans in search of a new land to settle.After many failed attempts he finally reached the Tiber River wheree he married the local king Latinus' daughter Lavinia, and after many wars and adventures built a city. The Romans considered him to be the founder of their race, and he was counted as an ancestor by Julius Caesar. Afetr many bloody battles Aeneas was victorious and founded the new kingdom in Italy and the Roman people.. |
| Ascanius According to Roman myth Ascanius, or Iulus as they called him, founded the city of Alba Longa, where many generations later Romaulus and Remus, who wer descendants of Aeneas, founded Rome. |
| Camilla She was a legendary virgin queen of ancient Italy of the Volscians, and a powerful huntress and warrior dedicated to the goddess Diana. Camilla led he army against Aeneas and his invading Trojans, but was speared and killed by him in the battle. In other versions she was killde by the Etruscan Arruns, who was in turn killed by Diana's arrows. In Virgil's Aeneid she is described as being so swift that she could run over a field of corn without bending a single blade, or even getting her feet wet when she would make her way over the sea. |
| Cloelia She was the Roman heroine who was given hostage to the Etrusan king Lars Porsena, during his siege against Rome. She escaped from him and swam across the Tiber back to Rome. He then demanded her return so that the Romans had to send her back as his hostage. The king admired her pluck and courage so much that he decided to set her free. |
| Horatius He was a Roman soilder who, with two comrades, held off the attacking Etruscans at the Sublican Bridge while the Roman army retreated across it, and later distroyed the bridge to prevent the Etruscans' from following. Horatius then sent his two comrades back to the others, while he was left alone to keep the enemy from the bridge. Whwn the bridge was distroyed he dove into the raging waters of the Tiber and successfully and safely swam to the the shore, despite the difficulty of trying to avoiding the enemy's arroms. |
| Latinus He was the king of Latium, the son of the god Faunus and the nymph Marcia, and was therefore a descandant of Saturn. Latinus gave his daughter Lavinia as a wife to Aeneas, but Turnus, the king of the Rutulians, desirious of her for himself, attacked the Trojans. His attack was joined by many others as they were stirred up by Juno, the hater of Trojan, whosignifyed the war by opening the two gates of the temple of Janus, and after a series of long, bloody battles, Aeneas was victorious. |
| Romulus and Remus They were the new-born twins of Rhea Silvia who were snet adrift on the Tiber river. To save his children Mars snet his sacred animal, a she-wolf, who nourished them with her milk. Later they were discovered in the wolf's lair by a royal shepherd named Faustulus, who took them to his home and raised them with the help of his wife, Acca, as shepherds. They later became well-known for their ability to lead others, and to fight. They were also reunited with their grandfather Numitor, but werenot content to live quietly in Alba Longa. Instaed they went off and founded a city of their own, which was Rome (754 B.C.E.). An arguement followed and Romulus killed Remus. Romulus after continued to rule Rome, which due to a shortage of women flourished. He eventually remedied this by capturing a host of Sabine women, who were celebrating at a nearby festival. After a reign of about 40 years, Romulus disapeared forever, in some myths he became Quirinus, who was the war god at the time. |
