Introduction
It is hard to believe that the second generation
MR2 has been around more than for ten years. Not only has those the styling
still look fresh, but the car sharp characteristics have not been rounded
by age. It has a mid ship layout as the name suggest, which provides excellent
response and grip. Power is provided by 3SGTE , which was introduced
earlier in the Celica GT4. The engine is rated at 200hp@6000rpm and 200lbs
of torque@3200rpm.
Driving
The MR2's greatest asset has got to be it's mid
ship layout. Not only is this layout great for braking, but it makes the
car react relatively quickly to driver input. The first thing that you
notice is that there is a lack of body movement during maneuvers. The car
has minimal squat under braking and roll during cornering. When corning
traction is exceeded, the limit will show up as oversteer. Many drivers
of the early car complained of the cars tenancy to snap oversteer. When
under heavy deceleration, the car's rear suspension caused the rear tires
to toe out. Changes were made in 1993 to correct this problem. The
ride height was lowered slightly to decrease weight transfer under braking
and the rear lateral links were lengthened. Bigger brakes were added and
LSD became standard. Many feel that Toyota went over board by dialing in
too much understeer, but being MR, understeer is never a problem at higher
speeds. Still many argue that the early cars are better and that oversteer
problems are due to inexperienced drivers.
On some mountain roads it can become a handful. Broken pavement really upsets the car during mid corner. You have to have a lot of confidence to be able to drive quickly and smoothly on these roads. The understeer on corner entry is a desirable trait, usually, except for only the slowest corners. Jerky motions can quickly lead to a spin out. The car has a tendency to oversteer when lifting the throttle. Being careful and gentle with the throttle is key to driving smoothly. Once you get used to balancing the car, it is quite a joy to drive.
Opinion
The MR2 is a great car overall.
It has excellent interior design;. The driver ends up seeing the interior
of the car more than anything else. When choosing a model, early models(91-92)
might be better for low speed racing like autoX, because of less understeer
and lighter weight. But for street and road racing, a 93 maybe better because
it is more predictable. But it is still a matter of taste. The MR2 can
be challenging to drive, even to experienced drivers. Those who are starting
out may benifit from a more easily controllable car. But, when driven well,
the SW can hold it's own against more powerful sports cars.
