GARBAGE - Bleed Like Me Reviewed by Cars

I cannot even begin to say how excited I was about this album being released. I adore Garbage. They are the only band I can think of where I have loved every one of their tracks on first hearing. So, I have to say I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad disappointed with this album. Though after several listens it's grown on me considerably I was gutted it wasn't instant like the others! I hate to say it but this is their weakest album. I had such high hopes when I heard Why Do You Love Me which is surely one of their finest tracks ever? Fantastic lyrics & so damn catchy. It is as good as any of their previous first album singles, if not better. I sound like I'm moaning & I am a little bit but don't let me put you off buying this album at it still has some fine songs on it. Run Baby Run is a little too Yeah Yeah Yeahs sounding for my liking but all the same a catch-fest of a song. Bleed Like Me is brilliantly haunting. Sex Is Not The Enemy is great (& tipped to be a single), as is the lovely It's All Over But The Crying. Bad Boyfriend is pretty good after a few listens too. It's just a shame tracks like Right Between The Eyes, Happy Home & Metal Heart (which according to a recent interview with Shirley is about Courtney Love) are a little forgettable. Boys Wanna Fight & Why Don't You Come over aren't so much forgettable just not very good compared to previous offerings. This album was made after the band "broke up" (depending on what member of the band you're speaking to) & I think it shows. They wanted to go for a "raw" sound which they have achieved. It's not as pop perfect as Version 2.0, or as polished as Beautifulgarbage, or as rocky as debut album Garbage. If this was their debut album you'd think they were a really promising new band & be looking forward to hearing more, but this is the fourth & for a fourth album it doesn't quite cut the mustard. You have no idea how it pains me to say that either - fingers crossed this won't be their swan song. They have & still can do so much better. 8 out of 10 ('cos they're Garbage! They can't get less than 8 in my book!) Best tracks - Why Do You Love Me, Sex Is Not The Enemy, It's All Over But The Crying
