Don't let the fact this band are labelled Emo put you off. What is Emo anyway? As far as I can tell it's out of tune, spekky NHS four eyes blokes that wear cardigans & sing about emotional stuff. Jimmy Eat World only apply to the latter so in my definition are not typically Emo (although there is some dodgy knitwear displayed in the photos inside the sleeve) *cue lots of Emo people sending me the correct defination of the term!* Though this is their 5th release I think it's only the 2 predecessors to this that need mentioning. Firstly, Clarity which was full of heartfelt lyrics but often lacked any real "catchy" appeal. Next is Jimmy Eat World (originally entitled Bleed America but changed due to September 11th) which oozed catchy (& essentially pop) songs, which you felt you knew all the words to even after just one listen. Though it did sail close to the usually awful typical American teen anthem genre it was nevertheless pretty faultless. What they've done with Futures is manage to combine the lyrical superiority of Clarity with the instant appeal of Jimmy Eat World & the result is very impressive. The album starts off pretty much where the last one left off with fast moving tracks with soaring choruses (just Tonight being a prime example) before it quickly descends to a mainly more mellow feel (the emotional Drugs Or Me - hmm, maybe they are Emo?!) Title track Futures I would imagine will be a future (no pun intended) single. The first track lifted from the album Pain is clearly the best song on here & in my opinion sounds very much like the Manic Street Preachers (this is a compliment okay?!) The 2 bonus tracks whilst good are a little unnecessary & feel a bit out of place. Probably would have been better as extra tracks on singles. All in all a brilliant album. Technically a step up from everything they've done previously though from a personal view I still prefer the Jimmy Eat World album. 9 out of 10 Best Tracks - Futures, Just Tonight, Pain, Polaris, Night Drive |
