Hamilton's 82nd Regiment of Foot – TRACKING the 82nd

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The military historian and writer John A. Houlding untiringly shared his analysis and interpretation of all the regimental and army records I encountered. Professor Gregory Urwin of Temple University in Philadelphia was first to respond; he escorted me into his Internet circle of expertise and knowledge, a group of authorities who freely contributed their incredible help. Lt. Col. Ian M. McCulloch, author of the recent Sons of the Mountains: the Highland Regiments in the French & Indian War, 1756-1767, gave me straight-forward direction and advice. As well, Canadian author and historian René Chartrand guided me to the available British military records at Library and Archives Canada, not-to-mention his own top-flight resources. Don Hagist reached into his files and found accounts of the dramatic shipwreck in 1779 that wiped out the grenadiers and two-thirds of the light company in the 82nd. These all are soldiers in the true sense—as in the Latin origin of the word: solid gold coin.

Without John Ball, my results in files and folders would have remained on the hard drive or worse, in a packing box waiting for publication someday. John has shaped all of it into HTML for the Web.

There could never be thanks enough for this —
