One of the main advantages of the main advantages of doing a modern languages degree, as I saw it in my pre-university days, was the Compulsory Year Out. It seemed like a great opportunity to travel the world, have great experiences, and oh yes, become fluent in 29 different languages. I also assummed I'd be so sick of academia by the end of my second year that I'd be desperate to escape, and when I pictured any friends I might actually make at university, all I saw was a faceless crowd. Besides, it was two and a half years away, so it didn't matter anyway...
