Two marble fragments recovered from the ruins of the same ancient city, the left fragment is from the strata dated at 1000 AD, the right fragment is from the far deeper level, dated at 1000 BC.
The older piece is carved from blue marble representing the sky with the face of the benign sun god rendered in incorruptible gold. Two thousand years later, the same image has been rendered using a dark marble with flame-like veins and a red, more earthly, easily tarnished copper face. The new religion, unable to vanquish the old god, has demonized it. |
