Mosquitoes are dangerous. They spread diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. It is almost impossible to wipe out mosquitoes completely. This is because they can be found everywhere and can live and hide in places where they cannot be reached. They live in bushes, in drains, in tin cans and even on rooftops. However, mosquitoes are not the cause of influenza as many people believe.
The female mosquitoes lay eggs in water or near it. In two or three days, the eggs hatch into “wrigglers”, so called because they are active in water. These are actually the larvae or the young of mosquitoes. Larvae will change into pupae before growing into adults. The male mosquitoes do not suck blood. It is the females which live on human blood.
Spraying the drains with chemicals can kill mosquitoes. The oil from the chemicals covers the water surface and prevents air from getting into the water. Therefore, the mosquitoes cannot breathe.
