The papaya is
a very common fruit in Malaysia. The first papaya of the world
seem
to have grown in central America. It was taken from central
America to India in the 16 th
century. From there it spread to other countries, southeastern
of India.
The papaya of
today are grown widely in Sri Lanka. Australia, the Philippines,
South
Africa and Malaysia. In India alone, there are about 170 000
hectares under papaya cultivation.
The papaya has
many names such as , papeeta, sea papapyi, pappali and may more.
Papaya trees grow easily and fast. They can best be grown from
seeds. The fruits of the papaya can be harvested within a tea.
The tree gives fruits all the year round. There is no season for
the fruit. It can go on producing fruits for about five years..
One tree can give up to 100 fruits. A papaya can weigh up about a kilogramme
or more.
Today there
are many papaya trees. The smallest of papaya trees give the
sweetest and the best papaya.
No such fruits
has as much as vitamin A as the papaya. The papaya has a yellow
coloured substance called carotene. The carotene of the papaya
can be easily changed into
vitamin A by our body. The carotene found in papaya is
the same of the carrot.. The
'pap in' (a liquid type of substance) in papaya helps in our digestion
