Story 6

Muthu stays with his family at Taman Sri Mutiah. He is 50 years old. He has been working as a rubber tapper at Titikaka Estate since he was 22 years old. He cycles to the estate
from his house every day. Usually, he reaches his work place about 5.45 a.m. after cycling
for about 15 minutes.
Then, he goes to a room to change into his working clothes. After that, he reports for duty and starts work immediately.
Before tapping a rubber tree, he removes the "cup-lump" and "latex-string" which are
known as scrap rubber. He puts them into his knapsack which he carries on his back. He taps the trees carefully so as not to damage the young trees. This enables the trees to produce plenty of latex for a long time.
After tapping about 500 trees, Muthu will rest for half an hour. At 11 a.m. he collects the latex and takes it to the processing station. The workers at the station then weight the latex and the scrap rubber. After the latex is weight, Muthu pours it into a big tank. The whole process takes about an hour. Satisfied that his day's work is over, Muthu then returns home.
