Not long ago a cargo ship was sailing from Miri in Sarawak, to Penang.
It carried a ton of rattan, several tons of logs and other types of jungle
products from Sarawak. There were twenty-one Indonesians and five Filipinos
on board the ship. The captain and his assistant were Chinese from Hong
Kong. Three days later, however, the boat sprang a leak. The men tried
to stop the leak but failed. Slowly the boat sank.
"Tie the rattan together," shouted the captain.
The men immediately followed his instruction. And when the whole ship sank,
they were able to keep afloat by clinging to the rattan.
Five days passed. The men suffered from hunger and thirst for they had
neither food nor water. They also had to bear the heat of the sun during
the day and the cold winds at night. However they continued to hold on
to the rattan. The captain tried to give them courage. ' We will get help.
A ship will soon come," he said again and again.
By the sixth day the men were very weak. And just when they were about
to give up hope, they sighted a ship. Frantically they waved to attract
attention. To their joy the people on the ship spotted them. Soon they
were taken on board the ship.
The ship sailed to Kuantan where the men were immediately taken to hospital.
They stayed in the hospital for one week. When they had fully recovered,
they continued sailing in a new ship provided by their company.
